05/19/2021 (part 3) Lesley's Ka'ena Update from Tuesday 5/18

What a long day. The morning started great

At dawn I spotted RE74 Benny sleeping down the beach. In the afternoon he showed up at another beach and I noticed he had something in the left corner of his mouth. I followed him down the beach. He hauled out for a couple of minutes, and I was able to photo document a fishing line with a piece of coral attached to it. Seems Benny was foraging on the reefs. He was reported.
Mom RL42 Leia and P03 Puka D7 spend the day undisturbed except for in the afternoon when RO40 Ka'ena showed up. He has a fishing line with a Damashi hook dangling from it. He was reported.
RL74 Kami was sleeping in what looked to be a tailor made shaped lava bed
RW02 PVKauai was sleeping in a tide pool
R3CX Nalu was in the company of a U/U, both in deep sleep. I couldn't stay longer to ID the
UU.
While in the NAR I met an old friend Michele Bane - some of you old timers will remember her from Kauai/NOAA, we catched up a little. It's funny how we travel in time with seals as a reference. How many times we met at Barbers airfield to transport seals to/from our rehab at Waikiki Aquarium. The hotline calls from island to island...we could have gone on for hours chatting. She says hi to all, and we'll get together soon to share NWH summer camp adventures.
Tomorrow will be another long day - Be safe 🌺😷
