9/29/2014 DB's Dailies: Kainoa,Duke&Kaiwi@RI, T990@Aina Haina, Buster@BH&SB, Rocky@Kaimana, Haupu@NIM&WSK

At 0658 from Makai Pier I found Kainoa (RN04) & Duke (RA12) at 1BS, and Kaiwi (RK96), 60 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet. When I got back at 0950 Kainoa & Duke were down on the beach front incline, and Kaiwi was gone.  At 1049 Kaiwi hauled out to 60 ft left of SRI. All remained the rest of the day.

9/29/2014 Lesley's Update on T990 and T21M

Because of last nights HOTLINE report of a seal at that address and later IDed by DB as T990, this afternoon on my way back from town I stopped at Wailupe Beach Park and walked down the beach.
I found T990 sleeping peacefully . The were some trails a little higher (very narrow beach) made me think he may have overnighted.
HOTLINE and V/C Dana were informed
I then called Sooz and went by her house to check for T21M but he hasn't hauled back out there.  Aloha,  Lesley
T990
Part II T21 at Diamond Head
Kimo & I responded a HOTLINE call for a seal @ Diamond Head late this afternoon on our way out to KPt.
We found T21M sleeping. Beach goers were very respectful.
Colleen will check on him in the AM.  Aloha, Lesley

9/28 DB's Dailies: Duke,Kainoa,Kaiwi&Nani@RI, U'ilani@KoOlina, Haupu@WP, Rocky@Kaimana, Buster@HB, T990@Aina Haina

When I arrived at Makai Pier at 0712 I found Kainoa (RN04) & Duke (RA12) together fronting 1BS, and Kaiwi (RK96), 60 ft right of Seal Rock Inlet, up in the Morning Glory. Her D#2 molt is 10%.

At 1057 Nani (RK60) would haul out 80 ft left of SRI, and galumph up and into the Morning Glory. Kaiwi would galumph over to join her.

At 1410 HB posse member Martha called with the report of a “cruiser” swimming the beach front at Hanauma Bay. Just as we arrived another call advised that the animal was on the beach at the east end. By the time we got down there at 1423, the animal had departed the beach and was just hauling out to the left side rock flats. It would take an hour to get the ID, but it proved to be Buster (RV08). His choice of haul out locations is significant. Prior to yesterday’s first time ever on the beach at HB, his only other HB experience had come in May of 2012, when, for 4 days he hauled out to these same left side flats, to hang out with his Mom, Ewa Girl (RS00).

Dana called at 1804 with a report of an animal in the Aina Haina area. I called the person and arranged to go to her house. When we arrived 0647 we found T990, with his 4DV tag clearly visible. He was snug against a hedge, and sleeping like a snoring baby. He appeared well and behaved appropriately.

At 0823 Team Billand called to advise of a call about an animal at Lagoon #1 , KoOlina. Diane T., would provide the U’ilani (RN36) ID at 0839. U’ilani departed at 1705. Thanks to Diane T.,& Jean.

Also at 0823 the Billands advised they were responding to a White Plains call. At 0838 the found Haupu (RB24) fronting #1708, WP. Haupu departed at 1600. Thanks to Laurie & Jean.

At 1211 the Billands advised that Dana had mentioned to them that Rocky (RH58) was once again at Kaimana. I had not gotten the word... again. I called Colleen and she confirmed that Rocky was there again today.

Two piece came in for the Yesterday’s News Department. Kimo Smith sent shots from Ka’ena Point yesterday. He came after Marilyn’s trek, and saw essentially the same cast, Ka’ena, RIP & RW02, but additionally he found BG (R303) in BG’s pool.

The other piece of info came from Michael Wharton who sent Team Billand underwater shots he took yesterday of U’ilani at Paradise Cove.

9/28/2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek from Sat 9/27

Marilyn & I did the KPt Saturday monitoring hike by the West side.
Out at the point we met Ken T. that came in from the Mokuleia side.
We found RO40 "Ka'ena" beside his pool and RR70 "Rip" in the main pool.
Ken reported seeing RW02 @ Hidden Beach on his hike back.

In the late afternoon I responded to a HOTLINE call and found T21M hauled out on a little stretch of beach in Niu Valley sleeping peacefully. The callers, neighbors and I spend sunset with the old dud' while talking story.

Once again I'd like to thank beach goers, volunteers and all others for reporting seal sightings to the HOTLINE and a special Mahalo to all responders.

9/28/2014 More on Paradise Cove Critters

Thank you Diane T for sharing the additional images of Pohaku and U'ilani at Paradise Cove.... certainly two beauties on the beach today.

I'm going to assume this is the angle of the photo.... but wow that looks close... (two people in the water in front of Pohaku)
I know this is part of the show.... but it would be nice if they also talked about the dangers of the nets too.
 U'ilani too cute
 good night!

9/27/2014 DB's Dailies: Nani,Duke&Kaiwi@RI, Rocky@Kaimana,Buster@HB&SB, Ka'ena,RIP&RW02@KP, Pohaku&U'ilani@PC

First posse member Gene at 0730, and then Jack at the Bay at 0732 called with word of the arrival of an animal to the beach at Hanauma Bay. When I arrived at 0740 I found Buster (RV08) . Obviously, the boy has completed his west side jaunt. We cordoned him off. Much Mahalos to all th HB staff who contributed to Buster’s comfort today. He would depart at 1057.

At 0929 I found Kaiwi (RK96) in the Morning Glory, 60 ft right of 3BS. She has begun her molt. D#1, 5%.

At 0955 on a pan I found Duke (RA12) fronting 1BS.

Again on a pan at 1200 I found Nani (RK60) newly arrived to join Duke.

A note on Rabbit Island locations. I’ve attached a map of RI showing the reference points that I use all the time. Hopefully, that will help you follow the game. The three Blue , Keep Off Island signs are referred to as 1BS..2BS etc. LPB is Left Point Beach, SRI is Seal Rock Inlet, and RRB is Rocky Right Beach.

Ever since finding Buster at HB this morning I was waiting for the other Buster shoe to drop. Drop it did, with a call from Ocean Safety at 1500 reporting an animal at the Blowhole end of Sandy Beach. Marilyn did the SPZ at 1510,and confirmed the Buster (RV08) ID. He remained at dark.

At 0952 Team Billand called to advise that they’d gotten a call about 2 reported seals at Paradise Cove. When they arrived at 1048 they found only Pohaku (RO28). Witnesses said there had been another, smaller animal there, but it had been run off the people getting too close.

At some point the animal returned, and at 1600 Diane T., called to report an RN36 tag, which is U’ilani ! She has never been known to venture out that way, so her arrival is a biggy !! Thanks to Diane T, Laurie D, and Carrie. Diane called at 1819 to advise that U’ilani had departed.

Marilyn, Lesley & Ken trekked to the end of the world again today. At 1042 Marilyn called to advise that they had found Ka’ena (RO40) and RIP (RR70) at Ka’ena Point. Ken would later advise that he had found RW02 at Hidden Beach on his way out.

Evening email from Diane Gabriel brought word that Rocky (RH58) was at Kaimana again today. I had not gotten the word. Thank You Diane.
