a Happy Debbie checking out the wallows left behind!!!

8/31/2014 DB's Dailies: Kainoa,Duke&Nani@RI, Kaiwi@LL, U/U@SB, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Kolohe@Maili Pt, U?U@MI

At 0734 from Makai Pier I found Kainoa (RN04) at 1BS on Rabbit Island. At 0815 Nani (RK60) & Duke (RA12) moved into my line of sight from further back on the far left end beach of RI. All 3 would remain the rest of the day.

At 1327 Melanie called with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at Buster Flats, Lanai Lookout. I also checked her at 1418.

I’m sure the 6 o’clock news will tell us what happened on the roadway out this way. All I know for sure is that the road was closed at the traffic light at Irma’s. The highway and shoulders became a parking lot. That was significant to the Monk Seal world because Dana called at 1340 advising that a caller had reported a “swimming head” , around Irma’s, and heading toward Sandy Beach. I managed to get around the gridlock taking Irma’s backroads, and as I was doing that SB posse member Jeff called to advise that an animal was trying to haul out at the east end, however the tons of adoring hordes would not allow it.
The animal departed just prior to my arrival. The same scenario plays out every single day of late at SB. I went to Blowhole Lookout for an overview but it was gridlock again. I got a quick look at the west end of SB and saw nothing. I could not go back the SB direction, I headed toward the back way through Hawaii Kai. SB lifeguard posse member Billy called at 1433 to advise that the animal had attempted an east end haul out again, with the same results. Ain’t long weekends grrrrreat ????

At 0642 Team Billand called with the report of Pohaku (RO28) a Nanakuli. Their shots of her amongst the forest of fishing poles says it all. She departed at 1810.

At 1300 they found Kolohe (RW22) at Maili Point. Ocean Safety called me at 1425 with the report of an animal at Magic Island. I notified Dana , who as of 1600 was awaiting further word.

Gary Langley sent shots of RN44 & Pohaku’s boy RF28 on Kauai.

 Duke and Nani!!
some curious on lookers.... just a wee bit too close people!!!
Kaiwi my she's looking fat... must have had a good dinner
 From Kauai - Pohaku's boy! and RN44 _ Thank you Gary !!!

8/30/2014 DB's Dailies: RIP@SB, Aukai@RI, Pohaku@Nanakuli, M&M@WP, Luana@Mokuleia, Temp402,RL42, Ka'ena&RW02@KP

At 0610 I stopped at the outfall and saw a familiar lump in the cordon, and assumed Kea had overnighted again. I continued on. At 0638 Marilyn called “So.... We have RIP “ What !!!!!!!!!! I hurried back to the site, and sure enough the lump hadn’t been Kea at all. In fact , Kea was gone. There before us was RIP with his “N1" clearly visible. Oooops! RIP would leave at 0716, so I picked up the stuff and continued on. I had just arrived at the Blowhole Lookout at 1032, and looked back toward Sandy Beach, to find an animal hauling out to the outfall. I hurried back down and sure enough there was RIP, back again. I redid the cordon . On Marilyn’s 1515 check RIP was gone. In an in depth check of RIP’s entire history I have no incidence of his having hauled out to Sandy Beach....ever , until today. In his 11 years beginning with his RI birth, he has been all over the place out this way but never Sandys. Marilyn also brought up a point. Assuming that he hauled out to check on Kea, we had Irma’s first born and newest born sons at the outfall. Okay, I have to say the obvious.... Sure would have been nice to see Momma Irma  there.... I just keep hoping our beloved Irma comes home.

At 1002 I found Aukai (RL12) at Rabbit Island. She would depart at 1059.

At 1130 one of my HPD posse called to advise that HPD dispatch had a report of a seal at Paiko’s. I found out later that the Hotline had also been called. After a lengthy wild seal chase thru Paiko’s and finding nothing I went to Kuliouou Beach Park, which was nearby, since I’d seen T990 there yesterday.
When I arrived I spoke with Tannya Joaquin, of KHNL News fame, who had seen the animal on a sand bar there, and observed a Speedo clad male pour water on it. Naturally the animal departed at 1100. She could provide no useful ID info. While an U/U is required, my dollar is most certainly on T990.

At 0637 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. Mahalos to Ashley, Laurie 7 Debbie.

At 0920 they reported a swimming head off shore of WP. It would prove to be M&M (R020) but she never hauled out.

Also at 0920 they advised that an animal had been reported at Paradise Cove. Diane T would respond but the animal was gone.

Another call from Lani’s (next door) came in . Diane T responded again, but again no animal.

Marilyn, Lesley, Kimo L, Bruno & Natalie did the end of the world trek. Marilyn called at 0806 with the report of Luana (RN58) at her Mokuleia birth beach. She called again at 1153 from the point where they had found Temp402, a molting RL42, Ka’ena (RO40) and RW02.

Kimo Smith had sent shots of his yesterday’s trek and had the same cast with the exception of Ka’ena. Kimo’s Y/N shots are very helpful in establishing RW02's ID. Today’s shots didn’t provide a lot, however when compared to Kimo’s shots, it’s readily apparent it’s the same animal.

Again in the Yesterday’s News file, Gary Langley sent some shots of Rocky’s girl RF58, on Kauai.

Yesterday's News from Lesley

Aloha Good People
Lesley sent this video yesterday, unfortunately initially the link didn't work..... This is first chance I had to post the updated information sent to me. Thank you Lesley for sharing!

I did a typing mistake on the video and all the way thru my "report"
The seal at the BlowHole cove was RK96 "Kaiwi"

With visitors in town I've been doing the tour guide.Today we did China Walls (where we met up with Gail !!), Spitting Caves, Blowhole - where we spotted RK96 "Kaiwi" in the little cove (DB confirmed ID) we headed to Sandy to meet DB with 2 seals: T990/4DV and RV08 "Buster".
We hanged around till both seals left.
It was nice to be back in my original grounds and see familiar faces from surfers to beach goers and be welcomed.  Aloha,  Lesley

8/29/2014 db Dailies: Kea&Buster@SB, Kainoa&Aukai@RI, Kaiwi@LL, T990@Kuliouou BP, Pohaku@Maili BP, RIP,M&M@NIM, Kolohe@GR

At 0600 I found Kea (RN46) waiting for me at the outfall, Sandy Beach. I cordoned him off. He was still there at dark.

I found Kainao (RN04) at 1BS, and Aukai (RL12) at Rabbit Island.

At 1219 Gayle called with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at Buster Flats, Lanai Lookout.

Buster hauled out to the Blowhole end of Sandy Beach at 1238. Gayle reported his departure at 1733.

I responded to a Hot Line call from Lesley at 1313 for an animal at Kuliouou Beach Park. There I found T990 logging in the shallow well out in Maunalua Bay. He appeared happy and well, and responded appropriately to my presence.

At 0623 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at Maili Beach Park.

At 0954 they reported an swimming head off shore of Nimitz Beach. A 2nd animal would arrive to join her at 1056. The Billands said it was M&M and RIP, but they never hauled out.

RIP did a later drive by past WP, but did not haul out. M&M tried to haul out at WP, but no luck.

At 1515 the Billands reported Kolohe (RW22) at Maili Guard Rails.
