5-8-2013 DB's Dailies:

The first pass through the quadrant was a bust, but when I got back to Makai Pier at 0950 I found Kainoa's chubby bod 80 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. He would be the only SE quadrant find today. He snoozed away the day, having RI all to himself.

At 0633 Team Billand checked in with the report of Kermit (R012) fronting #1708, White Plains.
At 0730 they advised that R018 had arrived, fronting #1707, WP.

At 0840 the Billands called to report that a possible Kolohe (RW08) had been on the rocks at Maili Pt, however when Barbara got back to the location the animal was gone, probably run off by the "permanent resident" derelicts that inhabit the site.

Team Billand called at 1258 to advise that they had been contacted by posse member , Laurie, at White Plains advising them that "N21", Buster (RV08) had arrived at 1005 to the other two animals, but departed again at 1030. He doesn't wanna' hang with da' boyz. He'z lookin' for Irma ! (though any female will do).

Lesley checked in at 1450 with the report of RL54 at "the elbow", Turtle Bay. Though she combed the entire east and upper east side, that was her only find.
Team Billand checked in at 1456 to advise that Kermit & R018 were no longer at WP. Barbara said that Laurie and told her that they were still there at 1330, so that is the departure window.

Lesley called again at 1524 with the report of Ua Malie (RT10) at her birth beach, Turtle Bay.

Probably most (or all) of you are already aware of the NY Times article that came out today, but just in case here is the link.

The NY Times article at least will bring attention on a national and possibly international level as to what we deal with as far as the plight of the Hawaiian monk seals.... What I will say, is I am proud to be part of the dedicated people who are trying to do something to help this species.... no matter how big or small it matters.  .... NOW as far as the link below....
DB said it right there aren't printable words... but having said that, we're not going to win over everyone, but there will be less and less people who will tolerate that kind of behavior or attitude.  When it comes to cultural issues, I leave that to the folks who can speak to that.... but I have to believe much of what he is saying is to an extreme and not very accurate.
Here is another link to a comment in the Garden Island News on Kauai. I have no printable words for this one.

 R018 at White Plains

4-19-2013 DB's Dailies: Sadie&Pup(D#37),Nani&Buster@RI, Kolohe&Kerby@Maili Pt, M&M,RIP@WP, Pohaku&Kermit@PC, Benny@Lagoon#4,RL54@Kahuku, La'akea@TB

At 0649 I found Sadie&Pup (D#37)(RB12) in the Morning Glory, 1BS, Nani (RK60) 60 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet, and Buster (RV08) behind Seal Rock Inlet. Mom and pup would move down to the far left end of the beach, for all swims and haul outs. Nani moved down to the water front rocks and remained all day. Buster moved down and I lost sight of him at 1016. I did not see him again today.

Team Billand checked in at 0706 with word of Kolohe (RW22) at Maili Pt.

At 0819 they advised that Kolohe was now gone, but Kerby (RW08) was just hauling out to Maili Pt.

At 0908 the Billands found M&M (R020) fronting #1708, White Plains.

At 0913 I got a call from my favorite Molokaian with word of Noa (R6FI) on her turf. Noa had last been seen on Oahu on 4-1-13 at Maili Pt, but the Billands. hmmmm who might that be?????? :-) It can only be the one and only Diane P.

At 1116 Team Billands reported Pohaku (RO28) at Paradise Cove.

They would call again at 1239 to advise that Kermit (R012) had hauled out to join Pohaku at Paradise Cove.

The Billands called at 1430 to advise that Laurie had called with word that RIP (RR70) had joined M&M at White Plains.
At 1445 Team Billand reported Benny (RE74) at Lagoon #4, KoOlina.

Posse member Dennis Kunkel did his usual Kahuku Golf Course to Turtle Bay trek today, and reported RL54 mid way between High Rock and Kahuku Pt, and La'akea at the elbow, Turtle Bay.

4-8-2013 R5AY at Pounders, and RL54 at Elbow Beach

Lesley and Diane hit the windward side and found R5AY at pounders, and RL54 at elbow beach. So nice seeing mother and daughter even though they were miles apart.....  Hopefully Lesley or Diane can comment on more on 5AYs condition....
Can one of you ladies tell us what's going on with her nose?  seal snot?  sand?  new mark?
can still see her "hip" bone but looking full around her chest and belly
 Here's little RL54

3-26-2013 Diane Hits Up Windward Side & Turtle Bay

N 32
 N32 at Turtle Bay
 RI37 at Turtle Bay
This poor animal... probably doesn't know what the heck is happening to her
Wonder how long it will take to lose the baby weight without a kid nursing
 RL54 last year's baby (R5AY's kid)
RL54 and Ua Maili so close yet .... apart
 Ua Maili
 R5AY looking FANTASTIC!!!  Wow!
I have to agree.... with some of the conversations that have taken place.... I think this is one of the cases where the "protection" zone is causing more of a problem than helping.  It is so visible from the road it causes rubbernecking and people that wouldn't normally pull over to look a reason to pull off the road.
