04/06/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Team R&B found Lefty RG28 at a west side location, he was near the inlet snoozing alone. They hung around for a while but there were no other seals in the area. When they did a recheck later in the day they spotted another critter doing 5 minute dives and foraging. Eventually they were able to ID R3CU. They wait to see if he would haul out but he never landed.

Team R&B went to check out paradise cove and found no seals. They heard kid screaming, he got stung

by a box jelly fish. So the good people they are Team R&B went looking and found over 300 of them on shore. They picked up as many as they could. After filling two gallon plastic bags they let people know to be careful as there were still some around.

From there Team R&B went to check the bay and found R3CX Nalu on the rocks snoozing. They were also treated to a couple of whales off shore.

They did go and check out yoks and saw two people walk up to a seal and take some photos. They could not ID the critter so it was reported as a U/M. They could not stay and wasn't able to get a photo.

I headed over to view Rabbit Island and observed four critters between 1:30 and 3:15. I was happy that Pua RF34 (mom) and P01 the kid were visible. Mom didn't move much and the kid did a lot of flipper waving. The good news I was able to see how much it has grown and its natural bleach was visible from time to time.

The other two critters were both male and both had tags. One male was larger adult size and really didn't move much snoozed the entire time. The other male had tags (brighter in color) and was slightly smaller so I would say sub-adult size. I looked for a quite some time and I am pretty confident it had a male belly.

04/04/2021 Easter Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Team R&B💕. I also received an email from diver Michael E.

Email from Michael included a video and some good photos of R3CU. His tag is a little worn but the scar on his underside shows that it was him. He was seen on the west side just before noon. He is looking healthy and his wound appears to be healing quite well.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island between 11:45 to 1:45. There were five seals on island today. RF34 Pua and P01 who spent their time behind waterfront rocks directly down from the 3BS during her entire observation. Marilyn did get a couple of glimpses of the kid but for the most part it was out of sight.

An unknown adult was on LPB when she started viewing but the seal entered the water a short time

after. Marilyn suspects this was the unknown adult male that later hauled out to another seal a little while later.

About 50 feet Makapuu side of 3BS was an unknown subadult female that came down from the vegetation. She would be joined by an unidentified adult male who pestered her and ran her around into the tide pools. He then entered the water and about a half hour later an adult seal hauled out again near 1BS and LPB.

Near the cliff face up from SRI was a brown juvenile seal with tags. Finally Marilyn got a view of her right side and could see that wonderful N2 bleach. It was Nohea M25/27 (Kaiwi's 2020 pup). She will be turning one years old on the 6th.

Team R&B started their day at RN14 Kalani foraging in the outfall and he was alone. While they were watching Kalani they saw a Mom and Calf humpback with some snorkelers close by. Although exciting that is pretty scary to be that close to a mother and calf of that size.

Next stop they found Kaale RH32 snoozing on the rocks alone. Then they noticed RN14 Kalani came into the area and checked in on his bosom buddy. There were a couple of curious snorkelers that came to the rocks and watched the seals. A wave came in and pushed the snorkeler up over the rocks, and they left the area immediately after that.

At another west side location there were lots of people out and about. They spotted one seal resting peacefully. Thankfully the seal was not disturbed by anyone. They were able to ID RG28 Lefty.

Later in the day they did another check on the area and Lefty was still there in the same spot. He was undisturbed by the fishermen near by, coexisting at their best.

They found R3CX Nalu at the bay today snoozing on the rocks. Lots and lots of visitors in the area, so Team R&B left to not bring attention to him.

Their last Easter seal today was the lovely RL42 Leia resting on the rocks alone. She is looking quite fat and hopefully nobody disturbs her peace and quiet.
