As we wish all the Mom's (human and flipper) a wonderful day, I am reminded of the little ones that will be the future. We are off to a wonderful year with first time Mom's and pups being born a week apart on the same beach, not to mention the new Moms are sisters. It doesn't get much better than that!
Having said that I want to acknowledge a special "pup" Miss Olivia. It seems like just the other day she was a wee one in the arms of her proud grandparents. To see her out there helping grandma reading tag numbers and truly understanding the importance of what she is doing leaves me to belief there is great hope for our future.  Our future generation of the human kind and the flipper kine.

To quote A Tale of Two Cities...... “It was the best of times...It was the worst of times”. That pretty much says everything about the first few hours of this day. It began with a Carola Johnston text advising that “we have a pup”. Then a Dana text at 0647 confirmed that it was R5AY with pup at Turtle Bay. The worst of times came at 1045 with a Dana text advising that “the pup did not survive”. NOAA personnel retrieved the male pup at 1330 and a necropsy is being done at this writing. That is 100% of what I know as of this moment. Hopefully, more information is on the way. Obviously, it is a very sad day.  This is just beyond sad.... my heart goes out to all the volunteers that were out there this morning....  Poor Honey Girl....

 At 0709 I found RM38 at 1BS on Rabbit Island. He would later enter the water and would haul out with Kainoa & Kea through the day.

 At 0910 Kainoa hauled out, 80 ft right of 3BS. He would be briefly joined by M38 at 1116.

 At 0935 on a pan , I found RG32 amongst the water front rocks of mid Middle Cliff , on RI.

 At 1009 Kea (RN46) would haul out of Seal Rock Inlet. He would be joined by RM38 at 1144.

 At 0919 Team Billand advised that they had 3 animals at Maili Point.

At 0921 they confirmed Kolohe (RW22), then at 0935 they got the Kekoa (RK72) ID.

Lastly , at 1043 they confirmed the RIP (RR70) ID. At 1043 they reported Rocky (RH58) at Iroquois Point

3/5/2015 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi,Kainoa,Kea,Aukai,RM38&U/M@RI, Rocky@SC, Haupu@KoOlina, RIP&Nihoa@LahiLahi

At 0714 I found RM38, Kaiwi(RK96)& an U/M at the log, 40 ft left of 1BS, on Rabbit Island.

 When I returned at 0850 Aukai (RL12) was added to the cast, fronting 1BS, and I found Kainoa (RN04) newly hauled out at 3BS, and moving up to the Morning Glory.

 On a pan at 0946 I found what would prove to be Kea (RN46) just hauling out at Seal Rock Inlet. He would immediately move behind rocks and become total invisible. It would take 5 hours to actually get the Kea ID.

 Gayle called at 1005 with the report of Rocky (RH58) at Spitting Cave.

 At 0729 Team Billand called with the report of Haupu (RB24) at Lagoon#4 at KoOlina. They confirmed the ID at 0742.

 The day went totally downhill after that. Dana mail advised that a Hotline call at 1106 brought word of a small black seal on the bottom of L#4. Volunteer Warren Miles confirmed that and saw to the retrieval of Haupu’s aborted fetus, at 1139.Team Billand arrived and confirmed the situation. NOAA personnel arrived and took charge of the male fetus. This was her 2nd such episode. The Billands advised that Haupu departed at 1308. Mahalos toFances Swike, Susan Harverty, and Lionel Trueman, all of home played a role in dealing with today’s events.

 At 1419 the Billands advised that DOCARE Officer Colt called them with the report of RIP (RR70) at LahiLahi. They responded and confirmed the RIP ID. While there they also found Nihoa (R912), also at LahiLahi, at Makaha Valley Rd.

 In the Yesterday’s News department Rikki Gobles sent shots from her first day with R5AY&PO1, at Turtle Bay,

5/14/2014 DBs Dailies: Weaner,Kainoa&M38@RI, R018, M&M@WP, Buster & U'ilani@RR

From the Makapuu Overview at 0648 I could see our little weaner foraging amongst the near shore rocks fronting 2BS on Rabbit Island.  It was 1111 before the kid decided to haul out to 2BS. Once again I was lookin’ at a female belly.

 At 0837 I found Kainoa (RN04) just hauling out to the far left end of RI. His N0 bleach is nearly impossible to see anymore, but his newly acquired CC scar over the LFF is a lifesaver.

 On a pan at 1139 I found M38 snoozin’ on the water front rocks of Seal Rock Inlet. He was gone with the rising tide at 1250. I did not see him again today.

 Team Billand reported an overnighted R018 fronting #1707 , White Plains. He would depart at 0904 but was seen “logging” off shore of #1760 for a while thereafter.

 At 0648 the Billands reported M&M heaping abuse on her favorite buoy at White Plains. She would haul out fronting Tower#2 at 0709.

 At 1305 the Billands advised that Eileen had called with the report of Buster (RV08) at the birth beach, and a foraging U’ilani (RN36) off shore at the Reef Runway.
