12/31/2016 Happy Birthday DB!

What a great picture and a wonderful opportunity to wish the SEAL WHISPERER a happy birthday and happy new year.  To Anissa and Lusi thank you for all you do and making this ol' guy have some special attention he so deserves.

This is what our monk seal community is about.... we look out for each other... we look after the seals and we genuinely want the same goal....  I have such respect for this man and those people I have worked with and have met over the years out there looking after our beloved Hawaiian monk seals.
Wishing you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year ! The New Year’s Eve day at Makai Pier was interesting. Though it began wet and gloomy, the arrival of Anissa & Lusi bearing a Birthday Tart, did wonders for the day. Thanks guys !!!

The Rabbit Island cast began with a couple of animals up in the grass, 70 ft right of 3BS. One would prove to be Kainoa (RN04). The other moved out of the grass later, and was the unknown molter that I’ve been telling about for 4 days now, calling her an A/F. Well , today she moved down , rolled over & showed me her PENIS !!!!!!!!! Yes, fans...... it’s a male !!! Oooops! Still no ID yet but I’m workin’ on it based on the new info.

At 0928 an animal would haul out fronting 1BS. It would take some time but proved to be Kolohe (RW22).

That was it until 1206, when on a routine pan of he beach I suddenly found a gang of 4 hauling out of Seal Rock Inlet. Again , it would take some time, but they would prove to be RIP (RR70), his younger brother Mojo (RI17), Kekoa (RK72), and the same J/M that I’ve been talking about for weeks now.

Team Billand reported Benny (RE74) at Secrets, at 0632. Somewhere along the line he relocated because at 1430 they advised that he was now at Paradise Cove.

Marilyn & Gina did the End of the World trek today. At 0955 Marilyn reported RL42 & RK36 on the back beach. At 1054 R3CU on the rocks at the main pool, and at 1101 Squinty (R330) at the main pool. On the way out they reported Ka’ena (RO40) at Hidden Beach, and then Kerby (RW08) at 1243, cruisin’ at 10Min Beach.

12/30/2016 DB's Dailies: Kolohe&A/F@Rabbit Island, Nani&KC@Moku Nui, Holokai@Turtle Bay, Pohaku@Maili Cove, RL42@30Min, Ka'ena&K36@Ka'ena Point

It was a thoroughly crappy day for Rabbit Island observations, but observe I did. I arrived at 0900 to find an empty island, but at 1032 Kolohe (RW22) hauled out and move up into the grass, 70 ft right of 3BS.

At 1052 the 80% molted A/F hauled out and moved up to join Kolohe. Both would remain at that location through the observation period.

At 1003 Barbara reported RL42 at 30Min, on the west side KP trail.

 At Ka’ena Point she found Ka’ena (RO40) & RK36.

Robert checked in at 1312 with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Maili Cove.

At 1206 I received photos from The Donna, showing KC (RK28) & Nani (RK60) together on Moku Nui today.

A Diane T. text brought word of Holokai (RG40) at the Keiki Pool, Turtle Bay.

12/29/2016 Late Entry Buster @ Sandy's - from Gayle

Buster starting his molt.... just think how handsome he's going to be in a few.

12/29/2016 DB's Dailies: Kolohe,A/F, A/M, 2J/M, &Kawena@Rabbit Island, Mojo+3 others @Makai Pier, Buster@Sandy Beach, Benny@Secrets, RL42@Makua Cliffs, Squinty&Ka'ena@Ka'ena Point,

At 0750 I found Kolohe (RW22) in the grass, 70 ft right of 3BS, and yesterday’s Unk A/F, 75% molted, 40 ft left of 1BS. Both would remain all day.

From 0850 until 1050 Makai Pier was the playground for 4 seals. The only one I can prove is Mojo (RI17) by his NB on his head. The others ranged from quite small (probably Kawena, though I have no shots of her), a juvenile sized animal, and one more that was larger. They were in play mode and ranged from the pier to Cockroach Cove and back. Getting shots was near impossible but a few did come out. At the end I was seeing only two (a big one & a smaller one). Four animals would begin to haul out to RI starting around 1050 thru 1145.

At 1050 the same J/M that has been around of late, hauled out at Seal Rock Inlet. He would be joined at 1145 by Kawena (RH36).

At 1102 a possible J/M , Unk hauled out fronting 3BS. I was unable to make an ID.

At 1109 an A/M hauled out to 1BS, in the general area of the molting female but there was no connection at all.

A Sandy Beach posse member called at 0926 to advise that Buster (ID by tag) was at the east end of SB. I called the Hotline. They had already received a call, and some one was on the way. I stopped by around 1415, and sure enough it was Buster (RV08). He has begun his molt, in the throat area (2%) but the ventral side looks ready to go.

Barbara and Tracy did the Ka’ena Point trek today, but first stopped at Makua Cliffs at 0941 to get an N20 bleach on RL42. At the point they found Squinty (R330) just being run off by the adoring hordes, and Ka’ena (RO40). Tracy got an N9 bleach on him.

Team Billand had begun my day at 0635 with their report of a 100% molted Benny (RE74) at Secrets.

An Anissa text this morning brought news & photos of Nani (RK60) at MCBH.
