Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:02 to 2:18 pm and there were five seals seen during that time.
RH76 Kala and PO13 hauled out on LPB soon after Marilyn started viewing. At 12:38 pm Marilyn noticed Kala was alert towards the water. There was a seal swimming offshore by mom and pup. After the interloper left PO13 nursed and later went into snooze mode. TH76 still appears to have some reserves. PO13 is a porker and again showed her female belly.
Initially, two weaners were hauled out near each other up form the SRI channel. Marilyn is reasonably sure one of the weaners was RV50 because of the applied bleach on her upper left shoulder. Marilyn wasn't sure of the other weaners sex so it was reported as an Unknown Weaner.
At 1:01 pm Marilyn spotted a Sun-adult Female: sub-adult to adult size, new coat, female belly and at least one red tag. The SF and the two weaners were near each other for the rest of her viewing session.
Team R&B decided to start their day on the west side. Their first finds were a plover, a turtle and a HFD chopper shooting them a shaka.
Finally they found a seal on shore with tourists hanging close by. The seal was a male and Team R&B hung out to try an make an ID. It wasn't until they got home looking at the photos they determined it was R416 Makali'i.
Next stop they spotted the same two seals foraging off the outfall. One of the seals was an adult female with lots of green on its coat. Theother seal was an adult with tags, other than that they had no other information.
Heading over to plains they found RT06 Marvin closer to the fence line area. He was resting and his molt is about 65%.
Barb mentioned that she's been walking around with deep sadness over the news of the two deaths recently reported of two of our pup. It is heartbreaking for sure.
NOAA reported the recent deaths of two young male Hawaiian monk seals on Oahu's North Shore: a 3 month-old pup RV36 found entangled in an unattended fishing net near Mokuleia, and a 1 year old seal RU02. Umi;umi confirmed to have died from toxoplasmosis.
