05/01/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn,  Melody and Team R&B💕.  

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 1:30 today. She on saw glimpses of one critter today. She's pretty sure it was P01 and could be he is now a weaner. He was in one of the tidepools on the rock flats of LPB.  She never saw Pua although she could have been in a hidden part of the tidepool.  P01 was ID'd by very light belly (male?) and the NB on the LFF.  Tomorrow will tell us more.

Team R&B got an early start and found H32 Kaale foraging alone at the outfall. They left after a while

and when they returned Kaale wasn't around anywhere. 

Later in the day at another west side location they were thrilled to find RH32 Kaale and RH76 Kala together on the rocks. They were happy the two of them were in a quiet spot away from the crowded beaches.  The waves got to them and they moved around a bit. Then Kala made her way up to higher rocks and of course Kaale was right behind her. They found a good spot and settled in for a good snooze.

While watching over Kaale and Kala they were stoked to find R3CU on lower rocks snoozing. He gained some weight since they last saw him and looking healthy. His sharkbite scar is healed making this a distinct marker. His cookie scar on his back and bleach spot were visible.  He eventually turned and went over to his water hole.

While on the road they got a call from a lifeguard friend of a big seal on shore at plains. They headed over immediately and when they arrived the lifeguards made a zone around the seal.  There was Rocky RH58 looking chunky but not huge. They stayed with her for a bit as there were lots of people.  While there Team R&B starting reminiscing of all the seals that would hang out there. A little sad how many of them are gone, Kermit, Irma, RB32 Haupu and her pups, M&M who loved to play with the buoy. Ewa Girl, R018 Max and where the heck has Buster and RIP gone to?

Melody went down to see Kaiwi RK96 and P02 early today. Unfortunately the two were the most active

earlier and were in full snooze mode when Melody arrived about 8 am.  The big excitement of the day when some woman walked into the SRA and got really close to Mom and pup.  For the most part Kaiwi and P02 ignored her, but the zone is there for a reason.  The obvious is to keep mom and pup undisturbed but also for the safety of people. There have been cases where a mother seal charged people who got to close.  Melody has video that she'll send us tomorrow.  Other than the rude woman Kaiwi and P02 were fine and all their adoring fans looked on lovingly.   Not to mention all the folks reuniting from when Rocky and Kaimana were there.
