I arrived at Makai Pier at 0740 to find an empty Rabbit Island. Thankfully, that changed at 1002 when on a routine pan I found Kolohe (RW22) newly arrived fronting 1BS. He would move up to the log, 40 ft left of 1BS for a Morning Glory snooze. He would move down to cool off at 1100.

 On a pan at 1148 I found what would prove to be Kimo Kai (RT10) just hauling out fronting Kolohe. When he moved up, Kolohe made I abundantly clear that he was in no mood to chat, and Kimo Kai moved off to the right, and maintained a respectful distance the rest of the day.

 At 1032 Team Billand checked in with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park.

 Sadly, I must report that Dana called at 1310 with the report of the body of three year old, female, Kaikaina (RL54) having been found in the Marconi Rd area between Turtle Bay and Kahuku. NOAA personnel have recovered her body, and a necropsy is underway at this time. (a late email from Dana indicated a necropsy may not be possible based on the condition of the remains) It is tragic news for all of us, but my heart goes out especially to all those aunties & uncles who were on the front line with her for all those days, weeks, months & years .  I too am extremely saddened by this news and would like to extend my heartfelt thoughts to all those who were involved watching over her.... especially my good friend Diane.... I am so sorry.

 At 1519 Dana reported an animal at Paradise Cove. At 1525 she confirmed the Benny (RE74) ID. 

Also on the 1519 text Dana advised that an animal had been reported swimming in the Ala Wai Harbor. Colleen called at 1605 confirming that it was U’ilani (RN36) in the Harbor. She has been a regular there for quite some time, though it has been a while since she has been there.

The SE quadrant was scary big today, and all spots were impossible for seals and short , fat , bald guys. Makai Pier was just as impossible. My lanai office was unaccessible, so I was doing Rabbit Island observations from the hallway with the door open, mopping the floor each time a wave blasted through the door. The worked okay until one got me around noon. Everything was drenched, but the camera seems to still be working.

 At 0746 I found Kea (RN46) at the log, 40 ft left of IBS, and Kekoa (RK72) in the Morning Glory, behind Seal Rock Inlet.

 At 0923 an U/U (maybe the same U/M of the last few days, but I never saw a belly), joined Kekoa, but would relocate to the Morning Glory fronting 1BS.

 At 0937 Kainoa (RN04) came into view, 50 ft left of 1BS, in the Morning Glory. I had been completely unware of him until he galumphed out of the bushes.

 It was the same story at 0958 when Cass (RG06) galumphed into view from deep in the Morning Glory, 50 ft right of 3BS.

 A DanaTxt at 0812 advised of an animal at Kaimana Beach, Waikiki. Karen Turner responded but the animal had departed. A shot from Brandi Apana proves that an animal was there , near the condo, and while Rocky has to be right at the top of the possibles list, the shot does not confirm that.

 At 0900 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at Keaau’s.

 Marilyn & Lesley did the usual Saturday, End of the World trek. The found Luana (RN58) at Hidden Beach, and Nihoa (R912) at 10 Min Bch on the way in. On the way out they discovered that RK36 had joined Nihoa. At Ka’ena Point they found RW02 between Ka’ena’s Pool & the Runway, and RIP (RR70) at the Main Pool. On the Back Bch they found Kaikaina (RL54). Ken Tingman got shots of RW02 with a snack.

 A call from Hanauma Bay at 0918 advised that an U/U had swum the beach front and hauled out briefly fronting a lifeguard stand , but immediately departed. Hanauma Bay had been open on my 0630 check, but thankfully, it closed shortly thereafter. It was not a good HB kinda’ day.

 At 1456 Diane Gabriel called to advise that she and Karen Turner were out at Turtle Bay. They reported R5AY at Elbow Beach, Holokai (RG40) mid way between the Elbow and the Keiki Pool, and a 100% molted Ua Malie (RT10) at the Keiki Pool.

Diane Terai had sent shots from yesterday showing a 99% Ua, so being done today was not surprising.

 At 1647 a Ocean Safety call advised of an animal at Kaimana.......again. No confirmation on ID, but again I gotta' put a cat on Rocky.

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0649 I found Sadie (RB12) & Kainoa (RN04), left of 1BS. As has been the case of late, Sadie departed early at 0951. Kainoa would remain all day.

 At 0720 Team Billand reported Kekoa (RK72) at Maili Point.

 At 0807 the Billands responded to a call about tar balls at Aki’s Beach. They found no oil, but did find two wallows, with departure trails, along with lots of dog tracks.

 At 0946 the found U’ilani (RN36) at the Reef Runway.

 Dana called at 1330 to advise that Temp319 had been seen at Ka’ena Point today, by Tammy & Dave T. I found Tammy’s excellent shots waiting for me when I got home. Tammy said she had passed NOAA personnel on her way out, as they were heading in. Tammy’s shots seemed to show that the green line since in Marilyn’s shots from Saturday, appeared to be a piece of netting, and was wrapped out the guys right front, lower tooth. A phone conversation with Tracy, who had responded, confirmed that this was, in fact, the case. There is no hook.

 Tammy also saw a molting U/U at 10 min beach on the way in. My guess is RL42, but I can’t state that as fact. At the point she found RIP (RR70) & RW02.

 Dana called at 1858 to advise of an animal reported at Kaimana Beach. Since Rocky is only 17 days into mom hood, that rules her out. Karen Rohter was responding. At 1932 Karen called to advise that the animal had departed at 1845, prior to her arrival, however witnesses stated that the animal had a transmitter on it’s back. Ordinarily, I'd jump at the RIP ID, however there is a sliver of doubt with this one because RIP was seen and photographed earlier today at Ka'ena Point. While it is technically possible it could be him, Benny, with his transmitter patch still on his back is also a distinct possibility. Hopefully, tomorrow will tell the rest of the story. Stay tuned.
