8/30/2015 LATE No FRILLS Post

Yet another race of some kind made getting around in the SE Quadrant a challenge for the first coupla’ hours, but thanks to Marilyn,Melanie&Gayle all the spots got checked.

At 0745 I found Nani (RK60), 80 ft left of 3BS. She would be joined by Aukai (RL12) at 1004. Aukai was back in the water at 1047. I did not see her again.

Marilyn called at 0902 , reporting Kaiwi (RK96) at China Walls. She got the same belly shots we’ve all been getting, but then went above & beyond and went to another location to get a much needed shot of her back. Kaiwi is a conservative 95% molted. Thanks too to Gayle & Melanie for braving the China Walls wave action.

At 0617 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) once again at Nanakuli. She would depart at 1411, only to haul out again further down at 1440.

At 1057 the Billands called to advise that Debbie had reported Kimo Kai (RT12) at Makaha. He reportedly departed at 1400.

At 1300 Benny was reported off shore of Kimo Kai’s location, but he apparently never hauled out.

The highlight of the day came at 1112 with a call from the Billands advising that they had gotten a Hotline call reporting Rocky (RH58) and another animal in Ewa Beach. They responded and confirmed the Rocky & Kolohe (RW22) ID at 1144. She’s baaaaack !!1/2015

8/292015 DB's Dailies: Nani&Aukai@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Luana@Mokuleia, RK36@Hidden Beach, R330,Ka'ena&RIP@Ka'ena Point,

On the road at 0550. The first order of business was to check Crappy Cove, Sandy Beach, for Benny. Thankfully, he had departed.

At 0650 I found a molting Kaiwi (RK96) at China Walls. I managed to get some belly shots, and wanted to stay until she moved, but the wave action on the rocks was just a little too sketchy. Fortunately, Gayle did an afternoon check and got another angle, but still haven’t seen enough to make a call on percentage. Based on shots of the last 3 days, it has got to be a conservative 30-40% range, but ????

I got over to Makai Pier at 0807, but Rabbit Island was bare until 1026 when, on a pan, I found Nani (RK60) fronting 3BS.

At 1104 she would be joined by Aukai (RL12). Both remained the rest of the day.

At 0615 Team Billand called with the report of a 90% molted Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. Terri would later report her departure at 1325, but alas, she returned at 1400, only to be run off by idiots at 1405, but hauled out again at Depot’s. Mahalos to Jean,Deb&Terri.

Marilyn & Lesley did the Saturday trek to the End of the World. Lesley had already seen Luana at her birth beach at Mokuleia, and at 0911 Marilyn reported finding RK36 at Hidden Beach. At Ka’ena Point they found Squinty (R330), Ka’ena (RO40), RIP (RR70).

Rikki Goble reported finding an animal on her way in from the west side. Awaiting photos.

Val Bloy sent shots of yesterday’s trek on Kauai. She provided a couple of shots of RG58.

8/28/2015 DB's Dailies: Aukai&Nani@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Kimo Kai@Makaha, Ua Malie&Holokai@TB, Benny@Sandy Beach

At 0700 I found Aukai (RL12)(0843), 80 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. She was still there when I got back to the pier at 0820, but entered the water at 0852. When I went back for my 1700 recheck Aukai was on the beach with Nani, right of the 3BS.

The highlight of the day began with a call ate 0939 from Gayle reporting Kaiwi (RK96) for the 11th consecutive day at China Walls. When she later looked at her shots, she noted that molting was definitely underway. Our looks at Kaiwi over the last several days have been somewhat limited but the 11 consecutive days was a hint. The girl is definitely molting. Thank You Gayle !!!

At 1049 Nani (RK60) hauled out, 40 ft left of 1BS. She remained the rest of the day, despite having people checking her out of just off shore. She was very much aware of them. The female actually put her surf ski on the rocks, but did not walk onto the island. A passing fishing boat advised them to get the ski off the island, which they immediately did.

Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t been mentioning Cass’s name lately. Each day I hope she will pop up in my life, but I must tell you that I has been 15 days since her last sighting. Just like her Mom and her sibs, she has disappeared. Only Cass Knows !

At 0625 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. At 0925 I got a call from Ocean Safety, reporting and animal at the Makaha Cabanas Condos. The Billands confirmed the Kimo Kai (RT12) ID.

Jon Gelman email report a visit to the Keiki Pond but mama Ua’ Malie, and a brief encounter between Ua’ and weaner Holokai. I got the warm fuzzies all over !!! Karen Turner also sent Holokai shot after Ua’ departed.

Email from our pal Val brought news and shots of the long lost KC (RK28). Last seen at the Marine Base in Kaneohe on 6-16-15. She is happy and well on Kauai, and looks to be the usual mess.

Posse member Vicki Hangai texted that “E40" was at Crappy Cove, Sandy Beach, at 1840. When I arrived I confirmed the Benny (RE74) ID. He remains at dark.
