05/06/2021 In Addition to Wednesdays Dailies

In addition to the already posted dailies I got late emails from Marilyn and Melody.

Marilyn made a quick stop to view Rabbit Island late this afternoon. There were three seals all on LPB.  Alone in the middle to back portion of the beach was the U/U#1. This may be weaner P01 based on coloration but it almost looked to be too big to be P01. Due to poor lighting it was hard to determine the seal's sex and she did not see the the sex.

Together in a depression behind the lip of the berm on LPB were two seals: UU#2 adult size and older coat. UU#3 hidden partly behind UU#2. Looked to be adult size and seemingly older coat. Undetermined sex or if there were tags. Marilyn did not see any applied bleach marks on any of the seals.

Melody once again went to visit Kaiwi and P02 and arrived very early this morning at 630 am. Mom and pup were already out for swim and way over by the jetty. Pup was holding his own in the water and Mom would hold him under the water a few and teach him to breath under water. They swam around for a bit and then Kaiwi took him and showed him how to hop up on the  reef. He initially resisted and barked but after a few he gave it a try and did okay. Mom helped with a flipper and lifting with her snout.  After a bit they were back in the water and went out about 100 feet and then it was back to their beach in the shallows. They headed out towards the lifeguard tower and went with the waves. Soon enough they were back on shore for a snack and a nap.

Just when Melody thought the adventures were done for the day, Kaiwi decided to take the pup out again. This time she headed back to the lifeguard tower but kept going heading for the Natatorium wall. The volunteer with help from others moved the crowd back and started to make a perimeter at the other end. Most people were respectful.  When Kaiwi and P02 got to the wall they did a little diving and then started to come on shore. Of course some folks were in the way and holding her back, but the volunteer got them to move and finally Kaiwi and P02 hauled out. By this time it was mid afternoon and Melody had to leave. Such a fun and exciting day.
