8-9-11 DB Dailies

To my complete and utter surprise, I found Irma (R010) waiting for me at Sandy Beach at 0623. She hadn't been seen in a few days, and I wanted ,with all my little, bald heart, to believe that she had gone off to her secret spot to pup. Nope...Wrong....Again ! There she was in all her chunky glory. She departed with the rising tide at 0907. I managed to follow her to Irma's , where she looked at haul out spots but then continued on to AD's . I lost her after AD's, at 1110. but my guess was that she was headed west. Wrong.....again....again. I got a call from Dera at 1151 advising Sandy Beach lifeguards had reported a newly hauled out animal. When I arrived at 1200 there was Irma, at the morning's location. I cordoned her off and she has remained the rest of the day. I picked up the rope at 1945. Irma remains. IRMA - you're going to give us all heart-attacks... Here's the deal big momma, get yourself over to rabbit island and relax and pop out that pup already. 


On my first Rabbit Island look at 0722. I found Duke (RA12) up in the Morning Glory behind Seal Rock Inlet, and Buster (RV08) on the water front rocks just left of Seal Rock Inlet. When I got back to Makai Pier at 1118 they were still there, and I found that Kolohe (RW22) was now at the far left end of the beach, and Nani was 60 ft left of 1BS. All would remain at those locations the rest of the day.

Dera called at 0750 with the report of an animal at Diamond Head. The caller described Rocky (RH58) to a tee. Dera called again at 0832 to advise that Rocky had been run off by a free roaming dog. Rachel would call at 1313 to advise that Rocky was back . Welcome home Dera....

Team Billand called at 0756 to advise that Max (R5EW) was a Nimitz Cove. At 1146 the Billands called from the Reef Runway to advise that T21M was visiting Kekoa. The security guard, Eileen also advised that Ewa Girl had been there all day yesterday.

At 1313 the Billands reported Ewa Girl (RS00) at Kalaeloa Campgrounds. She departed at 1805.

8-4-11 DB Dailies

On my first look at Rabbit Island dat 0642 I found what would prove to be Duke (RA12) and Kolohe (RW22) together, up in the Morning Glory, 40 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet , at the right end of the beach. They would move down to cool off at 0913, allowing the IDs.

At 0947 Nani (RK60) hauled out to join the boys . Surprisingly, there was only low level interaction. They all moved back up to the Morning Glory together, and snoozed for a bit. At 1000 all three (with Nani in the lead) moved back down to the water line to cool off. There were a couple more light weight interactions, but mostly it was just snooze and stay cool. All 3 began moving up in the late afternoon with the rising tide.

Team Billand called at 0849 with the report of Benny (RE74) fronting #1777, Nimitz Cottages. He remained all day.  At 0950 they reported Max (R5EW) at Kermit's Reef, on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty. They had watched him doing 4-5 minute foraging dives prior to hauling out. He too remained the rest of the day.

Rachel called from Diamond Head at 0950 to advise that Rocky (RH58) had once again overnighted. Her D#5 molt appears to be a conservative 40%. Her excellent shots also show that Rocky's natural bleach on her left fore flipper is once again visible.

Dana called from the Reef Runway at 1015 to advise that both Ewa Girl (RS00) and Kekoa were there on the beach, 25 ft apart. During her 2 hr visit there was no observed interaction. Kekoa did enter the water and swim in the near shore waters fronting Ewa Girl, but she showed no awareness at all. I'm sure Dana will have a first person report this evening so check the blog in the morning for her shots.

Dana was going to TB in the afternoon, for an R5AY&P shift,so stay tuned for those shots also. She also advised of another reported animal at Turtle Bay at 1252. Awaiting further word.

7-31-11 DB Dailies

Our first find of the day came at Spitting Cave, at 0732. There were chanced to see Kolohe (RW22). I'd last seen the boy on 7-25-11, again at Spitting Cave, but he has been MIA ever since. When we first saw him it was apparent that he was in travel mode, coming from further inside Maunalua Bay, and headed for the point. He did stop for 2 quicky dives, but kept going. I last saw him at 0754. 3 1/2 hours later he hauled out to Rabbit Island. About 3 hrs seems to be the norm for the 10 mile or so trip.

I got to Makai Pier at 0848 but it would be 0927 before I found my first critter, which was Nani (RK60) on the left end rock flats at Rabbit Island. She would enter the water at 1120 and I did not see her again today.
At 1122 Kolohe's little head popped up from behind the rocks at Seal Rock Inlet.  At 1129 Duke (RA12) hauled out to the water front rocks, 60 ft left of SRI. Kolohe galumphed over to join him and they spent the rest of the day together.

At 0944, Rachel called to report that Rocky (RH58) was once again at Diamond Head. Her shots showed two small breaks on her upper chest (lower throat).

I spoke with Team Billand late in the day, and they apparently had one of those extremely rare "Skunked" days.

Evening voicemail from Rachel brought new of a new arrival along side Rocky at Diamond Head. It seems that our little Max (R5EX) has made the journey from the SW quadrant, and joined Rocky this afternoon. You will also notice that Rocky has made great strides on her molt since Rachel's morning photos.

Vera spent time with R5AY &Pup today, and provided her usual oustanding shot of her day.
