Marilyn skipped Rabbit Island today because of the high winds. She did check some of the nearby beaches and did see a seal.  Getting a closer look she ID'd R7AF by his juvenile to subadult size, 7AF.7AG tags, male belly and his applied N2 on his rear dorsal and his N bleach on right side.  He managed to block most of the beach in the beginning when he was up against the cliff, but he then moved down closer to the water. 

Team R&B arrived at the bay and found the two ladies moving away from the grassy area to their

ponds. RH76 Kala took a dip in the shallow pond, then came back upon the coral area.

Miss Leina RL70 never showed her belly but they were told she is about 25% molted.

Next stop they were stumped. They arrived at the area and looked very carefully and then spotted a head of seal sticking out from behind a rock.  They had to walk away to the right to get a good look. They could see the seal was an adult and had some dings on its left shoulder, large seal.  They thought maybe R3CX but seal was reported as an Unknown Adult.

Lastly at another west side location they found one seal, resting alone in the strong winds. It was a little dangerous out there, but there on the rocks was the handsome little boy R416.  He's getting chunky filling in nicely.  Seems to like hanging out on the west side with Team R&B.

July 31 2023 Monday's Dailies

I'm going to provide an abbreviated version of todays dailies, because this old blog lady is in need of some rest.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:10 to 2:30 and there were four seals on island.

An Unknown Unknown seen in same spot as yesterday. Looks to be a subadult but was still hidden behind the sand berm.

Near 3BS:

Adult Male: smaller adult size, dark male belly and at least one tag. A pit scar above the left front flipper and possibly another in front of the right front flipper.

The AM was near a Juvenile Female: larger juvenile size, old coat with lots of green and two red tags.

On the rocks of RRB was RQ44 Mahina: juvenile size, green coat, green female belly and three red tags.

Marilyn also made a stop at one of the beaches and was happy to find two seals.

One of the seals was RJ06 Aka: adult male, darker male belly and tags J06/J07. He was the last seal nicknamed by DB before he passed. He holds a special place and it was nice to see him up close.

The other seal was R7AF: larger juvenile to smaller subadult size, old coat and two tags 7AF/7AG. His applied bleach N and N2 were visible.

Team R&B only had two seals at a west side location.

R416 was resting on his own.

RH76 Kala was at waterfront rocks. She kept moving closer to the edge as if there were another seal, but they didn't see any others.

July 28, 2023 Friday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabiit Island from 12:35 to 2:40 and there were four seals during her observations.

Initially near each other on LPB were the following:

Adult Female 1: adult size, older coat, tannish gray female belly and at least one tag.

Adult Male: adult size, darker coat, tannish gray male belly and two red tags.

Initially in the middle of LPB was Adult Female 2: adult size, newly molted, light ventral, and two red tags.

At some point AF 2 galumphed over to the AF 1 and AM. Then about 2:20 the AM moved into the water in the Makapuu direction and joined the Juvenile female who was near 3BS.

Juvenile Female: larger juvenile size, very green coat, green female belly and two red tags. When the AM joined her about 2:30 she did not seem interested and they were both snoozing when Marilyn left the site.

Marilyn got a text from posse pal Tammy late afternoon that there had been two seals at a beach close by. Marilyn headed over around 4:15 to 4:45 and a SRA was in place with a volunteer on site.

There was one seal when Marilyn arrived and was ID'd as R7AF: juvenile to subadult male with a lighter colored coat, tswo red tags 7AF 7AG. He appears to have a fish hook scar on the left size of his lip.There is an applied N bleach on his right side.

June 27, 2023 Tuesday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:25 to 3:00 pm, joined by Diane. There was four seals on island today.

Together out on the rock flats of LPB were the two weaners. RS12 and RS34, next to each other. They mostly were in "snoopy" positions (on their back with their bellies to the sky).

About 30 feet of the 1BS on the waterfront was an Adult Female: adult size, sandy female belly and two red tags. Diane spotted and several photos showed what appears to be a NB on her lower left side. This would suggest RK37 Huia. She also had something white on or above her left nostril. (is that a banana in your nose..... no it snot).  Marilyn couldn't tell if it was a wound, snot, salt or who knows what. Under all the sark sand appeared to be a grayish green female belly.

About 30 feet of the 3BS was a juvenile male that Marilyn believes to be R7AF: juvenile size, light
male belly, thin in size and two red tags. Several photo show an applied N bleach.  Earlier when NOAA had tagged the weaners, Tracy had tried to put N2 bleach on R7AF.

Team R&B gor to the bay today and found one seal. There was the very fat RH76 Kala, she was alone and resting.  They stayed for about 15 minutes and had to leave. 

They got stuck in traffic for over two hours today due to a five car accident. Plus they had appointments so they squeezed in one more stop. At another west side location they found one seal. There was R416 that they were able to snap a couple of photos.  

Just as an added bonus they saw a beautiful Fairy Tern.
