05/22/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Lesley, Leighton and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.  Leighton sent photos from his visit with RL42 and P03 yesterday late afternoon. Mom and Pup had a nice swim together.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island today from 1:20 to 3:00 and spotted five critters today.  On LPB was P01 identified by its size, shape and the NB on the LFF. Marilyn never got a good look at its belly.

Between the 3BS and SRI were two subadult female seals close together: SAF, subadult size, light tan

female belly and two tags.  SAF2, subadult size, light tan female belly with some green and two tags. (there are a number of candidates for these seals: RK37, RK38, RJ30, RH36, Marilyn did not see any natural bleach marks).

Behind the waterfront rocks at RRB Marilyn finally saw a bit of Aukai RL12 and P04 at about 2:35. Prior to that they had been hidden. Finally P04 started moving around trying to nurse.

As a side note I received a text from a friend who was at Ewa Beach and came across RH92 Nalani. She sent pictures and there is a great shot of her tag H93 tag.

Team R&B was out in full force with junior sealette. They walked to Ka'ena West and right at the start they spotted a well hidden seal in the rocks. Initially they could not make an ID, it wasn't until they were on their way out and checked with this seal and saw it was BG R303. She is looking really big! No tags, cookie scar under belly near her nipples. They were thrilled to find her.

Their next find was another fat female RN58 Luana. At first she was on her side and didn't look that big. But when she flipped to her belly it was Whoa Mama!  Team R&B were delighted to find her as they don't get to see her that often.

Team R&B continuing on their hike came across Lei Ola RH48. Then junior sealette called out there's

two seals. Sure enough there was Kekoa Alii RK72. Looks like these two have relocated and sticking together.

The next find was a big surprise. They stopped to have lunch on the cliff and were just resting when they noticed some movement. There was a seal wiggling its way to the rocks. It was R407 Kawika! His natural bleach on left side, no tags, scar on forehead and ding on his left shoulder.

After the hike to Ka'ena West they went to check the usual westside locations. They found two seals together at the seal inlet. It was RH76 Kala with a new male friend. Today R3CX decided to keep her company, poor girl can't get a moment alone.

Last critter Team R&B found was RG28 Lefty. He was at tracks snoozing surrounded by all the people out and about today. Seems he got the message to leave RL42 alone and head back to the west side.
