05/17/2021 Monday Monk Seal Dailies

Leighton sent photos of Kaiwi RK96 and P02 from watching over them this morning. You can see the kid is growing up!

I had the pleasure of heading up to Ka'ena Point with Diane. We met

up with Karen K. and Lesley, which was so nice to be with my old friends. We hung out and watched RL42 and P03 Puka. Mom was pretty much in resting mode with the little one moving about her flapping his flippers. After a bit we saw Lefty RG28 on the beach about 30 feet away, and he slowly galumphed his way over. RL42 became aware of him and raised her head a bit, he would stop. Then he would start heading towards them until finally RL42 rolled over putting Puka behind her and roared at Lefty. He got the message and laid low.

Team R&B went to a specific area looking for critters and saw nothing. They noticed some folks staring at something and then they saw a green seal. It was RL20 Kalua foraging. They watched and waited for two hours but the little guy never hauled out. Although good that he was filling his belly.

As they walked back they overheard a man speak of a seal at the jetty. They watched the water and sure enough there was RH32 Kaale foraging by the jetty. He was doing 5 minute dives and he never landed. They checked back later but he wasn't around anymore.

At another westside location they found Lei Ola RH48 on the rocks alone. They thought she was there

alone but then noticed the rocks in the pond and one of them was Kekoa Alii RK72. Guess he went into the water to cool off.

Much to their surprise they spotted good ole Benny RE74 snoozing along on the rocks. Always good to see da Benny!

At another westside location they saw there were fishers fishing and some of the folks from the camps. They spotted two seals on the rocks at the seal inlet area. There was RH76 Kala and RN14 Kalani.
