12/31/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: UU@ Electric Beach, Kekoa RK72, Ka'ale RH32, PvKauai RW02, RIP RR70, RL42, Aukai RL12, RN14, Benny RE74, 2 Rabbit Island Critters, U/U Lanai Lookout

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Mrs. Whisperer, and Gayle. And once again Vicki sent a message that she got skunked again.

Team Billand had a busy day starting with a seal foraging off of Electric Beach. There was no identification made but the seal was an adult doing 6 minute dives. 

Next came a stop at Maili and at first not one seal was there. They sat and waited and it paid off. First seal to come in and haul up on High Rock was Kekoa Alii RK72. Next came Kaale RH32 who hauled up next to Kekoa.   RW02 PvKauai hauled up next but he was on lower rocks.
RIP RR70 came in looking for parking, spotted Kaale and Kekoa, hauled up on high rock with them. All was quiet especially since Kaale was not head butting anyone.

At Makaha they found RL42 foraging off shore doing 6 minute dives, She was ID'd by a lucky tag shot. A second critter was also foraging about 75 feet away from RL42. They could not get a positive ID but the seal had 2 red tags, a nice coat, pudgy face and young. 

Team Billand stopped at Yoks was surprised to see a seal out there with all the people on the beach today. Turns out this large marge is RL12 Aukai ID'd by her tags. Hotline was called and informed. Team Billand met a couple from Mililani who got the story about Aukai.

If that wasn't enough Team Billand headed back to Maili to check on the boys only to find RN14 arrived and landed on lower rocks. Shortly after they noticed another seal approaching, he came in looked around, hung out in the water for a while then galumphed on the lower portion of the rocks. Team Billand was thrilled to welcome Benny RE74 back!

Mrs. Whisperer went to Makai Pier today and spent about two and half hours viewing Rabbit Island. Gina went out and kept her company for most of the time. Marilyn first spotted at 10:22 an adult male up in the morning glory just right of the 1BS. This was a male with an older coat. He later moved down the steep incline nearer the water and then turned back up. The seal had at least one red tag and its lower muzzle area seemed light.  Thinking this was the only seal on the island she was surprised to find another seal after checking across the island several times. At 1133 about 50 ft west of Seal Rock appeared adult size but she couldn't be certain of it's gender. It had a new coat but she could not see tags, seal will go down as a U/U.

Marilyn stopped by Lanai Lookout after spending a little time with Diane and me to honor DB's 75th Birthday.  It was already getting dark and the seal was on it's belly facing the water only showing it's left side. An adult with a new coat, her bet is on RW22 Kolohe.

And then there was Gayle who also out at Lanai Lookout. She forwarded a shot of this critter on his back so now we know it's a male. Another check mark as to it being Kolohe.

12/3/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Benny, RL42, UU @Electric Beach, Right Spot, Buster, Rabbit Island Critters, Holokai

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Posse Pals, Vicki, Gayle, Melody. Mrs. Whisperer & Lesley were out at Ka'ena Point today. Lesley's full report is in part two.

Team Billand out at 5:45 am at Makaha they spotted a seal in the Naupaka and heard another seal sneeze!  There was Benny and RL42.  Fortunately no one was around yet, Team Billand called the hotline.  The tide was very high this morning hitting the sea wall going up to the Naupaka.
The house renter woke and started gathering on the porch looking at the seals and taking pictures. The kids came out and were told to go around by their parents (good job!)  All in all good people were delighted to see the two seals, Team Billand shared their binoculars, talked story and gave them monk seal 101 lessons. A little later both Benny and RL42 moved down. Barbara commented it's like a little love story just like the old Irma and Kermit days. Team Billand had to leave at 11 am to check on the other sites. Volunteers were on site.

Team Billand's only other find was two U/Us at Kahe Electric beach area at 11:29. Team Billand was unable to identify or get any further information due to some distractions happening on the beach. Apparently there was someone who was creating enough of a commotion they decided to leave.

In yesterday's news department Vicki sent email last night of Right Spot at Baby Maks. On that note Gayle was out there today and found Buster at Sandy Beach who snoozed most of the day away. Volunteers were on site. Gayle also found four critters on Rabbit Island. Gayle found Right Spot at Kaupo Beach in the tide pool, same place as yesterday. She she must have been restless because she moved to the flat rock area but by 14:00 she left and ended up by the road. Volunteer was there, so Gayle departed around 17:30.

Also in yesterday's news an email from Melody brought pictures of Holokai who was at Turtle Bay yesterday. He was ID'd by his tags G40/41, from the photos looks like he was being very cooperative showing his tags. Hotline was informed. Holokai was on his own, no playmates hanging out with him.

11/15/2015 LATE NEWS: Underwater Video of Seal at Electric Beach at 10:30 AM

10-18-2012 DB's Dailies:

At 0710 I found Irma (R010) at the far right end of Makapuu Beach. She was probably there on my earlier check, but hidden by the large rock she was behind. I cordoned her off and she remained all day. She was there on my 1700 check, but gone when I went to pick up the stuff at dark.

At 1022 I found Duke (RA12) and what would prove to be Aukai (RL12) just hauling out together at Seal Rock Inlet on Rabbit Island. Duke would depart and haul out to Left Point Beach, but Aukai remained at this location until her departure at 1615.

When I got back to Makai Pier for my 1202 check I found that Duke had been joined at LPB, but Nani (RK60) and what I'll have to carry as an U/M with a new coat, and 2 red tags. I'm reasonably sure that it was probably Kolohe, but I can't prove it, so U/M. Nani's D#7 molt is 60%.

Dera called at 1214 with the report of an animal just hauling out to the east end of Sandy Beach. When I arrived at 1223 I found Buster (RV08). I cordoned him off, and he remained until departing of his own volition at 1630.

Team Billand called at 0713 with the report of M&M (R020) fronting 1708, White Plains. She would be joined by Benny (RE74) at 1055, but he departed only return again at 1557.

At 0757 Dana called with the report of an animal at at Turtle Bay. She called again at 1707 to confirm the Right Spot (R016) ID.

At 1422 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) at Electric Beach.

Zeeny called at 1205 with a report on today's adventure. She found R912, 700 meters KP side of the Mokuleia KP parking lot, and then continued on to Ka'ena Point. To the Mokuleia side of "the runway" she found RL42 in the company of Ka'ena (RO40). At the point she found Noa (R6FI) and an U/M. Awaiting photos. Hopefully the U/M will be identifiable. The RL42 find will, I'm sure, easy a lot of minds.
