Tammy made the trip out to check on Mom and pup today. When she arrived PO1 was all by herself. Tammy watched her rest, then did some playing in the shallows only to haul out for another rest. Tammy was there for a few hours and RJ58 Kaimana never showed up. We "may" have a weaner, but mom hasn't eaten much for a bit so maybe she might be getting some food. We'll see, its not unusual for mom to leave and return later..... then again only Kaimana knows.

Tammy also made her way to check in on PO2 and Mom Lei Ola RH48. She witnessed two feedings

and lots of resting. She was hoping to see some water time. PO2 made its way to the waters edge then mom put a stop to it by blocking the kid from going into the water.  

Team R&B covered some the routine beaches and it was nuts. The winds were wind and it was raining. on the west side. Most areas were covered in high seas, choppy making it really hard to see anything let alone getting close to anywhere.

Their one and only seal was swimming about and never hauled out during their observations. It was an adult and that is all they could determine.  The seal was reported as an Unknown Adult.

March 4, 2023 Saturday's Dailies

They decided to change things up today and headed to the other side of the island. They took the ride and then made a the long hike out. On their way out they first ran across a large male on shore with signs around him. They weren't sure but think it is RK36 Kauai Kolohe with the scar on the right side by his fore flipper. They did not see any tags and did call him in.

Further along they spotted some boobies flying over the ocean. Then

they came across Laki RQ64 on shore. She was snoozing for most of their visit. At one point she moved down by the shoreline to cool off and then returned to "her spot". This little girl will be turning one next month.

The goal was to make it out to see PO1 and Kaiaman and when they got to the pupping site, PO1 was in the water. RJ58 Kaimana was no where in site, but they did see an adult female K80 coming in to where the pup was in the water.  The two PO1 and K80 met and played with each other in the water. It was about 10 minutes or so, when they saw and heard RJ58 surfing in at warp speed. Her mouth was wide open and she was vocal, not to mention pissed off.

She went after K80 for a bit, until K80 took off to the right. She landed after a few minutes and kept her distance from mom and pup.

Kaimana and PO1 hauled in, had a nursing session and then went into snooze mode.

If that wasn't enough thrills for them they continued on and was able to spend some time observing Lei Ola RH48 and PO2. Pup is over a week old and looking too cute. Team R&B observed a nursing and lots of snoozing. 

Melody made it out to Kaimana and PO1 today. When she first arrived there were some seal and albatross fans in the area.  Kaimana RJ58 and PO1 were in the shallows playing in the water. About 30 minutes later mom and pup came up on shore. Of course PO1 wanted to eat right away, but mom made her wait.  After the kid bit her a few times she did present and after feeding they took a very long snooze. Melody did a little education and outreach with a group of 50 children, that had to be fun.

Feb 25, 2023 Saturday's Dailies

Well Marilyn did not view Rabbit Island but instead headed over to the pupping site. Since it was a beautiful day and she realized her friend had never seen a Mom and Pup this was a perfect opportunity. 

Kaimana RJ58 and PO1 were in the water when they arrived. They hauled out about an hour later, had a nursing session and a snooze.  

Since they were out and about it was worth making it out to check in on the Laysan Albatross.  

Team R&B headed out to Kahe and spotted a lot of splashing. There were seals fronting the pavillion

area where the divers usually go. Two seals hauled out briefly, but the snorkelers and divers were on shore. The two seals did not stick around. Team R&B did their best to get people back but it was crazy.

Then the three seals in the water took off, heading in the direction of KoOlina.  They called the hotline.

They ID'd RL08 and Nalu R3CX, but just couldn't get anything on the 3rd seal.

Next they hurried over to secrets and saw folks walking by three seals by the rocks. There was RL08 (so we know where he ended up), RG28 Lefty and RL12 Aukai at the bushes.

They called the hotline and out out signs. While they waited they educated folks that wanted to approach.

A volunteer finally arrived and that's when another seal was hauling in. There was RN14 Kalani who tried to go on the other side of the rocks near the entrance, but too many people were on the rocks.

Kalani came to the area where the other three were hanging out.

Auntie was out trying to keep a couple from walking past the seal, but they did it anyway.  Team R&B told the volunteer who the seals were and then they left.

They took a walk over to paradise cove and there on the rocks was Nalu R3CX.  There was a man close by who was feeding the turtles, by picking up seaweed and taking it over to the turtles. Team R&B informed the hotline.

At another west side location they found two seals, RH76 Kala and RK72 Kekoa Alii. Seems these two seem to an item these days.

Over to the left on high rocks was a male seal who wouldn't show them much for an ID. Finally the seal's tag was visible and there was RL20 Kalua.

As an added bonus the spinner dolphins were out having fun.
