02/25/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Marilyn, and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. Also in todays news RK58 (Rocky's boy from 2018) was sent to Ke Kai Ola for treatment to wounds that were possibly inflicted by dog.  Good news he's in really good hands. (sorry I don't have the link to the news report)

Marilyn left work early for an appointment. On her way home she saw a seal at Sandys and didn't have time to stop, BUT after her appointment she went to check it out. There was an adult male by the lifeguard stand near the waterline. His tag G41 would make this Holokai RG40 looking all grown up. Marilyn took time to educate a number of folks about Holokai.

When Marilyn was heading back to her car she saw HMS signs closer to the outfall. She walked over

and there was an adult female seal without tags and a scar on her upper chest. Her lays Right Spot R016 and she is looking healthy.

Team R&B's morning started really slow, they wait two hours for a seals by tracks. They did see whales which passed the time. They left just before 10 and from another location they saw a seal haul up on shore right where they had been. They could see people were heading over to the seal so they went back. When they arrived there was RH32 Kaale and two men sitting right up with him. They asked the guys to give the seal some space. The guy responded by saying I don't have to back up any more, Team R&B explained the seals were endangered and protected by state and federal laws. The response was I'm not moving, I'm far enough. (between you and me this is the type of thing that makes my head spin, so disrespectful).  Team R&B called the hotline, and that is when they finally moved. To add insult to injury, one of the dudes said he knew John!  REALLY???

Luckily once there was room two more seals came in, Ka'ale, R407 Kawika agitated and barked at Kaale. The other critter was G28 Lefty and all three left the site headed to the black rocks.  Volunteers arrived and Team R&B filled them in and left for the day.

Team R&B headed over to another west side location  and were thrilled to find five seals. RH76 Kala and Kekoa RK72 were on left mid high rocks. RL70 Leina was to the right and R3CU was there. RW02 PvKauai was on lower rocks, sleeping then rolled into the playboy pond for the rest of his snooze. Next critter in was RH48 Lei Ola, and they were happy and surprised to see her.

Team R&B 💕 called it day. It was a successful but frustrating day!

02/16/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕.  We also have news from Ke Kai Ola on one of our 2020 pups "Mele" a little female born on Oahu. Here is the link to the Big Island News. We know she's in good hands and will be fatten up soon enough.

Team R&B💕 started their day spotting three seals and only being able to ID RN14 Kalani. By 8 am they notices a seal hauling up at tracks. They hurried over and found Lefty RG28 high up on shore by the big boulders. They called the hotline and stayed watching over Lefty and Kalani. Surfers were out again with the big waves.  Around 9:40 a volunteer finally came by. She places three signs, took some pictures, made some calls and left the area. Team R&B stayed for a couple more hours. One girl put her towel near the seals and was going to lay down, when she spotted Team R&B and them moved away from the seal.  Then a man with his children came charging over to the seal, the Dad wanted the kids to get close to the seal for a picture. Team R&B called out getting their attention and they moved.  Team R&B had some appointments but they came back for an later check. Same BS was going on and no volunteers to watch over the seals.

Checking another west side location they only found Kekoa Alii RK72 snoozing alone. He was on lower rocks snoozing the day away.

Stopping off at the bay they were thrilled to once again find the beautiful Lei Ola RH48. Today she had company RN44 has returned to his usual location.

Can we get any closer?

What sign?

September 10, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team T&D, and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand went to check on RH92 at KoOlina day 10 of her molt. They arrived at 5:45 am and found RH92 up by the Naupaka Bush snoozing in peace. She appears to be 99% done with her molt this morning and very likely it will be 100% by days end.

RH92 galumphed down to waters edge, as usual sneezing so loudly everyone who was there laughed. Team Billand met up with Miss Marice from Australia again, and she was so happy to see RH92 is nearly done with molting during her visit. Team Billand also had the pleasure of meeting two dogs being pushed around in a stroller named Yoda and Bruce.

Team Billand can see molt on RH92's right fore flipper, her hind flippers and a small dot on her snout. Other than that is pretty much pau.
During the past 10 days with RH92 Team Billand noted they met some really special people, folks from all over the world.  Personally that is what makes being out there half the fun, AND how can you not love Team Billand and their spirit, dedication to our beloved monk seals.

Team Billand had to leave by 8:30 am, there was a nice crowd of folks watching out for RH92.  The newly created monk seal posse hard at work :-)

Team Billand had an appointment they didn't have much time to look around today. They did check a few spots and found only one more seal today. They found RG28 at 1:25, he was on his side snoozing. He was alone and getting hit my some of the waves coming in. They could not read his tags, but they did see all his cookie scars.

Team T&D are on the Big Island for a little vacation. They headed out early morning checking a couple of areas but did not find any seals. So they put plan b into place and went to visit Ke Kai Ola.
Tammy made some AWESOME cookies for the Ke Kai Ola crew.

They have four seals from the NWHI all girls. The seals were going to get their names from a cultural practitioner later today.  After catching up with some of the staff, they were asked to go to the observation room. Team T&D got to see a tube feeding with one of the seals. This was Tammy's first time seeing this, and of course no pictures are allowed, so this is a memory that will be imprinted in their minds.
Team T&D knew the staff was busy so they headed out, and will check back later in the week.
