05/15/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Marilyn, Melody and Team R&B๐Ÿ’•.   Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Melody took the day off from Waikiki and got her 2nd Covid shot (thank you Melody!) Anyway right after breakfast she got a call that a seal hauled out at Iroquois Point. She immediately thought of the usual suspects like Rocky of Nalani so off she went. When she arrived she met with security and he brought the signs, in that he was a new security guard Melody gave him the monk seal 101 and setting up the zone.

Melody then looked over the critter and soon realized it was not one of the females. Finally the seal

went on his stomach and she saw the natural bleach just about his RFF. It was Kolohe RW22! To the best of her knowledge and the last 6 years she lived in that area she had never seen him there. She shared her photos with Team R&B to make sure it was him, and they were surprised of his location.  Kolohe still has the injury on his snout, it doesn't look any worse than the last time she saw him. Melody called the hotline and a little over an hour volunteer arrived. Melody went home to rest!

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from about 3:15 to 4:15 and saw five seals today. At LPB was weaner P01, identified by weaner size, shape and coloration, no tags and NB on LFF.  P01's sex is still a mystery, at one point we thought male, but now looks more female. We won't know until NOAA can get out there.

Between the first and second greeneries was an JM, unknown juvenile size, darker male belly and two tags. (most likely a 2019 pup).

Near the 3BS was an UJ unknown small juvenile size, and no tags. This juvenile looking a little thin probably one of the 2020 pups. There were no applied bleach marks visible.

Then Marilyn saw RL12 Aukai and P04 on the rock flats near RRB. P04 was mostly hidden behind the waterfront rocks. Aukai's applied N13 bleach was visible.

Team R&B had a pretty slow seal day today. Their morning search, they came up with nothing, then

they had to have their car serviced. They returned to check the usual spots and still nothing until after lunch they finally found two seals.  Once again Miss Lei Ola RH48 and Kekoa Alii RK72 were keeping each other company. Very sweet to see these two hanging out together, reminds me of the old days with Irma and Kermit.

The only other critter was at a west side location and their last stop for the day. There was RH76 Kala on the rocks and she was alone.
