1/12/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: Kekoa Alii RK72, Kolohe RW22, 1 Rabbit Island Critter Y/N Kauai Kolohe RK36

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Gayle.  In the yesterday's news department I got an email from photographer Melody.

Yesterday we noted RK36 Kauai Kolohe at Nani Kai. Melody was out there at 5:00 pm yesterday and he was still there closer to the water. She was only there for about 15 minutes and managed to get a couple of great shots, including his tag shot 4DJ.

Team Billand was out at Maili they saw a seal come torpedoing into the area looking around and then landing on the rocks. When they did their recheck he was still there in the same spot snoozing.
The second seal came in the area looking, the waves were swooshing him around. He made it in to the rocks and stayed. They ID'd Kekoa Alii RK72. He was there in the same spot on their next check.

Team Billand spotted a critter foraging off Nanakuli doing 6 minute dives. It has a clean coat, adult unknown male or female.  They did not stick around long, but long enough to see this Safron finch admiring itself in their car mirror.

Gayle only spotted one critter at Rabbit Island. But did spot as she called it " 3 lolo heads " at Lanai Lookout. For some reason they strung a line across the water ?? why?? walk? zip? who knows. But HPD Officer Aiu was waiting and watching for them to cross over before calling DLNR.  Now if that isn't excitement I don't know what is !

8/22/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Benny (RE74), RN14, Ka'ale (RH32), Aukai (RL12), Right Spot (R016), Kaiwi (RK96), U/U Rabbit Island

Today's Dailies are brought you by Team Billand and Posse pal Gayle.  Thank you both for your endless efforts, ya done good.

Team Billand had an early morning sighting of RE74 Benny. At 6:15am he swam in quietly looked around on shore on the reef, and then as quickly and quietly as he arrived he was gone. They did not see him again.

At 6:41am same location they spotted RN14. He did his usual swim around the lagoon went towards the right and was gone shortly after.

Between 7:15am and 9:55am Team Billand came across RH32 Ka'ale and RN14 arriving together.   Barbara captured some shots of them in the water hanging out, playing, doing their seal stuff.

Team Billands' last stop brought them to Aukai RL12. Aukai was on shore resting looking healthy. The hotline was informed. They also checked the area for nets since this seems to be a popular spot for them.

Gayle came across Right Spot (R016) this morning looks like she spent the night. She also spotted two seals on Rabbit Island, and lastly found Kaiwi at the Kokee flats.

3/1/2017 DB's Dailies: Kainoa&J/U@Rabbit Island, Benny@Secrets,RK36@Nanakuli BP, Pohaku@Makaha, Kolohe&RN14@Maili, RIP,RW02,Kerby&Kekoa@Nanakai BP

It was a perfect Monk Seal day. For the bipeds, maybe not so much.

On my 2nd attempt at Rabbit Island observations at 0857 I found that Kainoa (RN04) had returned home. His new bling was clearly visible. I immediately contacted Mark Sullivan with the news. They definitely want their camera/transmitter back. Based on the conditions, NOAA personnel opted out. Maybe tomorrow.

During the down pours of the morning, an animal hauled out fronting 1BS on RI. I could barely even see the island. Later in the day when I returned for an afternoon session ate 1230, I could just make out a sliver of a probable juvenile animal back against the cliff, behind the dune, left of 1BS. No hope of an ID. Once again, maybe tomorrow.

At 0610 Team Billand called with the report of a probable overnighted Benny (RE74) at Secrets.

At 0944 they would report RK36 at Nanakuli Beach Park.

At 1025 the Billands found RIP (RR70), RW02 & Kerby at Nanakai Beach Park.

At 1224 Team Billand reported Kolohe (RW22) & RN14 at Maili, showing off their nearly matching right side “cue ball” bleaches.

At 1220 they reported the arrival of Kekoa (RK72 to Nanakai Beach Park.

At 1414 the Billands reported Pohaku (R028) at Makaha.
