Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 9:10 am to 12:18 pm and a NOAA team went out to the island today. Mark and Rob did a survey and some bleaching.   They were able to bleach four of the six seals that were out there today.

At the back of the Lanikai side of LPB in the shadows was RU70: weaner size,  female belly U70 tag. She is RJ30 Wailea's Mokokua Nui 2025 pup. (formerly PO13).

There were three seals on the 1BS side of LPB. There was some

interaction among three before they entered the water at 9:23 am. Marilyn saw them later near the 2BS for a short time. Then at 9:57 am, one of the seals hauled out on the Makapuu side of 3BS and then the two other seals hauled out to her.

The three seals were:

RQ32: sub-adult to adult size, light female belly, two red tags and a small dark scar on the right side of her face. She was born on Molokai. She has been seen on the east side several times. Marilyn suspects she was the  the A/F reported yesterday. She got an N on

bleach on her left hip, unfortunately she moved before she got a N60 bleach.

RK24 Bruno: adult size, newer coat, light to medium gray male belly, lower lip scar and two red tags. He got a N33 bleach on his right side.

R7AF was the third seal of the group: adult male, darker male belly, two red tags. He later relocated to the RRB channel where the NOAA team was able to apply N61 bleach on both of his hips.

Near the waterline between 3BS and SRI was an unknown adult labeled Adult Male: large adult size, dark mottled gray male belly, no

tags. He got N32 bleach on both hips.  Maybe NOAA can identify him from their photos when they get back to the office. He almost got a flex tag but he moved before they could get to it.

Near the SRI channel was RU38: older weaner size and shape, yellow female belly and two red tags. She did not cooperated in the efforts to bleach her, so no bleach.

Well Team R&B had an unusually slow day. Their only find today was Nalu R3CX and he was foraging all day. They went back later and the day and he was still out there.

Seems all the seals have moved on, things changed when the super surf came in. Hopefully they'll be back soon.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:01 to 2:19 pm and there were six seals seen during that time.

On LPB was Weaner 1, weaner size and shape and two red tags. It never showed its ventral so it is unknown if it was RU24 or RU38. It moved up the beach as the tide rose, but it never rolled over.

Again on the waterline of rocky shoreline between the 1BS and 2BS was MO11 and PO22. Mom and pup seem fine. The pup still struggles to nurse because MO11 always seems to present to the pup with a rock blocking her nipple area. Mom and pup again moved up and down the rocks several times. Marilyn did observe one nursing.  A throw fisherman was on the island and managed to walk by all of the seals, but none seemed to respond and he seems to try to give all the seals wide berth.

Close to 2BS were RL12 Aukai and her pup PO12. Pup seems active and healthy and seems to like to play with mom's mouth and rear flippers. Marilyn saw one nursing session.

Weaner 2 was out on the rock flats between 3BS and SRI. Although the weaner gave Marilyn a partial ventral view, it was not good enough to determine its sex. So weaner 2 it is. Later Weaner 2 moved into a tide pool nearer shore and then Marilyn lost sight of it.

Marilyn made a quick stop this morning at one of the east side beaches before heading to the pier. There was RQ32 (Molokai female born 2022) was in a zone set up by Gamma Gayle. RQ32 is small sub-adult size, tan female belly with some green and two red tags. She doesn't seem to have many ID markers. 

Team R&B made some quick search as some spots coming up empty. Their goal for the day was to find the hooked seal they saw yesterday. They believe the seal is RN04 Kainoa based on his cc scar on the right side.

Along their route, they spotted a seal from afar on shore. They knew it was a male with tags. They got to the area to see the seal was set up in a zone of flags and one sign. It was RW02 PvKauai resting peacefully.

They were determined so they headed out to Ka'ena West with hopes

of finding the hooked seal. They were out there just about to give up when they noticed one of the rocks was too smooth.  (that would be me). Sure enough it was a seal, and it was Kainoa RN04. At first they didn't see the hook which is a trebel lure. They stayed for quite awhile waiting for him to move, to determine whether the hook was still there or not. 

Two men passed by and noticed Kainoa. They started to go down the cliff to get closer. They went closer to get some pictures. Kainoa started moving and finally flipped to his belly and up a rock. That is when Team R&B noticed the lure was still there, snug stuck to his lower belly.  Meanwhile the two guys noticed Team R&B taking photos, so they decided to take off.  Kainoa remained, resting.  They never saw any fishing lines, just the big lure.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:41 to 3:34 pm and there were five seals seen during that time.

On the waterfront rocks between Middle Cliff and 3BS were two seals:

Sub-adult Male: sub-adult to adult size, dark gray coat, medium gray male-belly and two red tags.

Sub-adult Female: sub-adult size, tan female belly with lots of green and two red tags.

Out on RRB was a Juvenile Female: juvenile size, older coat, light yellow female belly with a small line scar midventral, unsure about tags.

At 1:14 pm, what turned out to be weaner PO4 hauled out on LPB from the surge channel: weaner size and light female belly.

It was not until 3:15 pm that weaner PO3 hauled out down from 3BS. Marilyn had seen him playing in the nearshore waters for about 15 minutes before he hauled out. 

Marilyn had got word from Gamma Gayle of two seals on the beach  this morning. Marilyn headed over and between 9:35 to 10:55 am and the two seals were separated about 50 feet apart.

RQ32 (born on Molokai in 2022): sub-adult size, light female belly, tags are worn in the white paint is missing on the Q32 and Q33 was easier to read, comma shaped scar on right lower cheek and line scar on base of RFF. This is the first time Marilyn has seen RQ32, but she apparently has been seen in the neighborhood  recently.

TempN25; sub-adult size, mottled male belly, no tags, scar at base of LFF, applied N25 bleaches mid-dorsal and rump.

Team R&B arrived at pokai and found RH32 Kaale hauling up onto the rocks. There were no lines, no hooks, looking very healthy. He seemed alert and aware someone was there.

They hung out for a bit and then realized why he was so alert, there was another seal hauling in.

Although they were happy to see another seal they saw the seal had a line trailing.  They ID'd R3CX Nalu as he came all the way up. They

could not see any hook that was visible. They noted the line going alone his body and over his right fore flipper.

At one point they saw a swivel at the end of the line by his right fore flipper. He pulled at the line, head in the air and was able to land just fine.

He slept the whole time they were there. Then at 10:22 am he took off and they never saw him again or which direction he headed off in.
