3/25/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (Part 1)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Gayle and Lesley.  Lesley had a very busy day at the point so her full report will be part 2 of the dailies.

Team Billand was out before the crack of dawn and found da Benny RE74 at Paradise Cove. He was way up near the fence, so they quickly put up a zone only roping off one side that all the tourist come by and signs on the opposite side. They called the hotline and left message with location and seal ID.
Benny was pretty still not moving except to pee.  They sent a text to volunteer Karen K. 
I guess one of the big benefits of being out at the beach before the sun, is seeing the night sky. Barbara noted the stars were awesome, seeing the little dipper to the right, Scorpius so clear, about 5 satellites and 2 shooting stars, not too shabby. 

This morning Gayle checked the beaches on the east side and found Right Spot R016 close to the keiki pool.  She called the hotline to report her location. By noon the beach was packed with people, volunteer arrived on site shortly before. Gayle left to check other sites, and returned to check on Right Spot around 3:00, the parking lot was packed but Gayle spotted a second volunteer on site.
At 5:30 on her final check Right Spot and volunteers were gone, but the crowds remained.

A nice story worth sharing, this morning while Gayle was waiting for a volunteer for Right Spot, one of the families that were there asked if the seal was Right Spot, so she responded yes. The dad said their daughter (5/6 y.o.) knew the seal from pictures from class, which Gayle asked if her teacher was Pua? Yes! Gayle met Pua last year and they had many conversations about Right Spot, so she knew Pua was teaching the kids about the seals and respect for the environment and nature. XOXOX to Pua!  Once again here is how being on the beaches, sharing with people allows for others to share and in this case a 6 year old knew about Right Spot!

There were three Rabbit Island critters today. In the photo with two the white blobs in the greenry are the Sootys nesting.

Gayle found her beautiful Kaiwi RK96 chilling at Kokee. Gayle also found Kolohe RW22 hanging out at Lanai Lookout again today. Based on the clear skies everyone was out enjoying the weather and beaches. Let's hope no one was out there bothering Kolohe.

At 0705 I found what would prove to be Buster (RV098) up at the vegetation line, 60 ft left of 2BS on Rabbit Island. He would later move down to cool off, and remained there the rest of the day.

At 0745 we found Kaiwi (RK96) doing 7 minute dives at Spitting Cave. At 1137 Gayle would call to advise that there were now 2 animals at Spitting Cave. Analysis of her shots leads me to believe that the other critter was Kolohe (RW22), based on the location of the "N" on his N33 bleach in one of her photos.

At 1026 Mojo (RI17) hauled out to join Buster on RI. He would spend the rest of the day there. It took a while,but the natural bleach on the top, left side of his head, became clearly visible. Unfortunately, the crappy photos don't capture it.

Team Billand called at 0648 with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Paradise Cove. They would report in again at 1100 to advise that she had relocated to Secret Beach.

At 0756 the Billands reported Makaiwi (R4DF) fronting #1706, White Plains.

At 1321 they reported 2AW at Tracks.

At 1615 the Billands found Benny (RE74) joining Makaiwi at #1706, WP.

The Billands found R912 at Guard Rails, Maili at 1811.
