I received an email from Kathy this morning informing me the unknown male was still on site. Today he moved by the cove where as last evening he was closer to an area where there was music, food and drinks. Thankfully people were respectful. Kathy was out there today for a while. 

Hearing this news I informed Team R&B to see if at some point in their travels they could check in and see if they could make an ID.

Team R&B started their day watching multiple seals foraging at the outfall area again.  The waves were "victory at sea" rough and high! It was difficult to keep track of the seals and to make an ID.

They know one of them was RH48 Lei Ola, and RH32 Kaale was also out there foraging.  They continued to watch and spent a long time trying to figure out who was who. They also were able to ID RL08.

The highlight of their day and what brings them much joy was watching the whales. The whales were putting on quite a show today. They got some great shots of them jumping out of the water, what is missing is hearing all the people cheering.

Team R&B did make their way out to Iroquois to check out the mystery adult male seal.

They studied the animal and there was a volunteer on site. The seal has no tags, old looking, scar over his heart and male. Initially they thought maybe RN14 but they didn't see the things they need to see to confirm. 

Then they thought RK36 who is an older male and he does pop up in the area every once in a while. RK36 doesn't have tags. Either way this old mystery male appears to be ready to molt!

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:44 to 3:28 pm and there were three seals seen during that time.

Initially the only seal visible when she arrived was R416 Makali'i on LPB: smaller adult size, light yellow male belly and several distinctive scar.  Marilyn thinks he is the AF she reported yesterday due to the pit scar on the base of the LFF. 

Marilyn kept looking for the weaners but did not see Weaner #1 until 1:52 pm when it hauled out on the Lanikai side of the beach at Middle Cliff. She only got a partial view of the weaner and couldn't determine its sex.

Weaner #2 hauled out among the water front rocks between 1BS and 2BS at 1:56 pm. The weaner moved among the rocks for quite a while. At one point the weaner tried to moved up the berm, but the sand caved in and the pup tumbled over. Marilyn only for a partial view of the weaner's ventral and could not decide if it was a male or female so it was labeled as Weaner #2.

Team R&B started the day at pokai where they found one seal. It was RM31 Kai at the zen area resting alone. 

They were batting zero again so they left the area and found dolphins out and about having a blast.

Since Team R&B weren't having much luck on their side of the island they decided to head out to the other side and check out the pup activity.

They were thrilled to finally see their first pup of the year. Aw a real cutie, fat and active. Luana RN58 and PO9.

While checking out mom and pup they saw a seal hauling in towards the site. It was fast and landed briefly, looking at Luana RN58. The seal gave a grunt and took off. They were able to ID him by the cc scar on his back, scar on right of body near flipper and scar on the right side of his face. It was RK36 (Kauai Kolohe).  Mom and pup

were facing the water and went to sleep.

Next they headed over to a different area where they found RL98 Lina and PO6. The pup is fat and was busy nursing. There were signs up but the area wasn't fenced off. There were visitors out checking mom and pup and a volunteer educating the folks.

Team R&B wasn't sure if the girls would still be hanging out together at the bay. When they arrives they were thrill to find them both still there.  RL70 Leina is nearly done with her molt about 90% molted. She just has her rear area left.

As for Miss Kala RH76, she has started her molt as far as they could tell.

On a sad note they chased a feral cat away, but it was too late it had killed a shearwater.. Sadly this is like the fourth one in the area.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:15 to 3:30 and there was a total of seven seals on island today.

Initially there were five seals on LPB and one at RRB.

The seal on LPB were:

On the Lanikai side of the beach was RP24 Mohala who recently completed her molt: juvenile size, new coat with the light gray belly, two red tags and nb on the tip of her LFF.

Near the middle of LPB was Adult Female 1: adult size, new coat, light female belly and two red tags.

The next seal was one of the weaners: weaner size and coloration, light female belly, and two red tags. The weaner moved up the beach and behind the sand berm for at least an hour then moved back up into view and galumphed over to AF1.

Near the 1BS was a Juvenile Female: juvenile size, female belly, two red tags and older coat. 

Next was Adult Female 2: adult to subadult size, older coat, tan female belly and two red tags.

At about 3:00 pm an Adult Male hauled out and started to galumph up to AF1, but then changed direction and galumphed over to the JF and AF2. The AM: adult size, dark male belly, not sure about tags. He has a curved scar behind his RFF so this might be RK36 Kauai Kolohe. About 3:25 pm he entered the water and then moved in the Lanikai direction, hauling out for a short time to visit RP24.

Alone out on the rubble rocks near RRB channel was RQ44 Mahina: juvenile size, old coat with lots of  green, green female belly. Although Marilyn didn't see the three tags she did see two tags in her LRF. She entered the channel briefly when some snorkelers showed up off shore of her location. She later hauled out on the rocky beach.
