They started their day at kahe and there were two seals. The brothers RP30 Puka on left rocks and RM31 Kai. They were there for an hour or so when they notices a man pass them who went fishing. The man pointed at the seal and Team R&B acknowledged that the seals were resting.  Then a couple of women came by to look at the seals, at that point Team R&B decided to leave. They turned back to look and saw rocks being thrown. They ran back to see and saw an old man with a floppy hat was throwing rocks at RM31. They yelled for him to stop

but he kept at it.  Team R&B called HPD, who arrived and they spoke to the man.  Team R&B had to leave but left their name and phone number with them.  Team R&B also called DOCARE, who were about 40 minutes out, Team R&B updated the officers.

They returned to the area a little later in the day. They heard a third seal had arrived. When they arrived there was a fat seal resting near the brothers. No tags, scar on the right side of head, funky right fore

flipper.  They believe this could be RN14 Kalani, who they haven't seen in a while.

After a stressful day they decided to drive down to the west end and were happy to see a seal on shore. There was their little guy RP28 Wakea.  They were especially happy and grateful for the lifeguards for posting orange flags and a couple of signs.  The beach was buzzing and the surf was huge.

July 18, 2024 Thursday's Dailies

Team R&B had some appointments today, so the little time they had they made the most of it. They headed over to Sand Island to visit with RH58 Rocky and PO10.

They were surprised to see there wasn't anyone out there except of the volunteer. This must be a welcomed relief for the volunteer to not have to deal with the crowds. 

Rocky was nursing PO10 until the pup rolled on to his side. The kid is adorable (aren't they all) and getting chubby.

While in Honolulu they went and found some Fairy Terns. Team R&B has a deep appreciation for these beautiful birds.

I made a quick visit to the pier to view Rabbit Island. I was only there for about an hour and saw at least two seals possibly three.

When I first arrived a seal was just hauling out by the 1BS. After looking at the photos I believe this is one of the weaners. 

As I scanned the island on the far right side was a yellow kayak with a throw-net fisher by the 3BS. He eventually made his way across the island all the way to LPB. 

When I was watching the fisher make his way across the island the "weaner" had gone back into the water by the shoreline.

When the fisher made his way to LPB he climbed into one of the inlets. This when I discovered two seals in one of the inlets to the left.  The best I could tell one of the seals seem to be an adult and the other smaller perhaps a weaner. Getting the photos was a challenge because of the waves.

I did file a report with DOCARE and submitted pictures. Hopefully they were able to nab the guy.

June 29, 2024 Saturday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:05 to 3:40 and there six seals seen during that time.  Unfortunately there were seven kayaks and nine people on the island. Extremely frustrating Marilyn called DOCARE and submitted information on the DLNR tip app. Marilyn did get a call back saying they would try and get an officer out. Marilyn doesn't know if anyone came out, the kayakers did leave the at 3:30 pm. Marilyn doesn't know if they were met by officers when they returned to Kaupo Beach Park.

RH76 Kala and PO8 were on the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB. The pup looked huge in todays photos. Kala vocalized multiple times when some of the kayakers were near her and the pup. After the kayakers headed back to their kayaks, PO8 nursed.

RL12 Aukai and her adopted pup PO3 were barely visible above waterfront rocks between Middle Cliff and 3BS. Marilyn could not tell if Aukai reacted when the kayakers walked by her on two occasions. 

On the rock flats next to SRI were two seals:

Adult Male: adult size, darker coat, dark brown male belly and two red tags.

The AM was next to RK37 Hui who is about 30% molted. She was ID'd by her adult size, lighter female belly and nb on lower left side.

Team R&B decided to leave the west side and go explore. As many already know Rocky RH58 gave birth to P10 on sand island. They went to see the ol' gal and her new pup who is a little boy. They also discovered the pup has a white nail (possibly another bleach mark).  They said this little boy is one active bugga, they saw a nursing session, watched him navigate around

mom for a snooze.

They saw a couple of surfers walk into the zone and out through a a hole in the fence. Team R&B informed the volunteer on site.

Along with Mom and pup there were lots of terns flying around, they even spotted an egret catch a lizard.

Heading back to the west side and stopping at Kahe they were thrilled to find three males resting on the rocks. Kalua RL20 who is looking all grown up, fat and healthy. (that's probably from all the fish he

steals). Then there was RM31 Kai resting looking very relaxed.  

The third male took some time to ID. They even consulted with the posse for help. Finally it was determined this was R617 Kimo. He is looking quite big, and they did see some markers that confirmed his ID. On his head there is a double line scar, not to mention a scar on his right cheek and a black dot on his chest area.

June 24, 2024 (part 2) Rabbit Island

Here is Marilyn's Rabbit Island Update:

I viewed Rabbit Island from Makai Pier from 1:35 and 4:00 pm. It was mostly sunny with frequWhent passing clouds and moderate winds.

There were ultimately six HMS and two fisherman on RI during my viewing session.

When I first started viewing RI, there was only one HMS in sight. It was RK37 Huia who was snoozing on rock flats near SRI. She later moved up onto the beach. She was ID'd by her adult size, older coat, cream-colored female belly, at least one red tag and the nb on her lower left side. She was aware of the two kayak fisherman who landed not far from her at 1:53 pm. After the fisherman had traversed the whole island, they decided to throw net near her and she entered the water at 3:48 pm. She then swam in the Lanikai direction and hauled out between the UJ and RL12 and PO3 on LPB at 3:57 pm. Then she galumphed up and around the UJ and headed to the back of the beach.

Both Moms and pups were swimming when I started viewing. At about 2:03 pm, RH76 Kala and her pup PO8 hauled out on the waterfront rocks a short distance Lanikai side of 2BS. The pup nursed and then went into snooze mode. Kala was not pleased when the two fisherman walked near her and pup. She appeared to vocalize. When the fisherman came back by later she looked at them but did not vocalize.

I saw RL12 Aukai and her adopted pup PO3 in the water briefly. Then at about 2:30 pm they hauled out on the 1BS side of LPB. The pup nursed and then

went into snooze mode. Aukai did react when the fishermen walked by. Shortly thereafter she charged a small seal at the waterline.

A short time later at about 3 pm the Unknown Juvenile (UJ) hauled out in the middle of LPB. Aukai kept her eye on the UJ but did not bother her again. The UJ was juvenile size with two red tags. I never got a ventral view so I don't know the seals sex.
