7/4/2015 DB's Dailies: Kea&Cass,RI, Nihoa&Benny@PC, RI37@3Tables, R330,Ka'ena,RW02,RL42&U'ilani@KP, Ua Malie,PO3& La'akea@TB, 7-4-15 / YN, Kaiwi,R330,RIP&RW02

At 0840 I found Kea (RN46) fronting Left Greenery, on Rabbit Island. He would snooze away the day there. It would be 1139 before I saw my next critter. On a routine pan I happened to see a glint, down in a tide pool left of Seal Rock Inlet. It would prove to be Cass (RG06). She would move up briefly on her way to the next tide pool, but it was enough to get the ID. That was the SE quadrant cast for the day. Thanks to Gayle for the usual rounds.

At 0645 Team Billand reported Nihoa (R912) at Paradise Cove.

Dana called at 0925 to advise that Benny (RE74) had joined Nihoa.

Also on that call Dana advised that RI37 was at 3 Tables today.

Marilyn & Lesley did the usual Saturday trudge to the End of the World. They were rewarded with 5 animals. R330, Ka’ena (RO40), RW02, RL42 & Ui’lani (RN36).

In the Yesterday’s News department, Ken Tingman had gone out late yesterday to KP, and reported Kaiwi (RK96), R330, RIP (RR70) & RW02. Melanie checked in at 1509 to advise that Ua Malie & PO3 were at the birth site, and La’akea (RK82) was at Elbow Beach, Turtle Bay.

Diane Pike checked in from the wilds of Molokai to provide shots of Mama RW30, and her son, PM5. Thank You Diane !!

Last but not least, it’s the 4th of July and that means a Happy 2nd Birthday to Kea (RN46) !!

4-16-2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek

Kimo Lyman joined me today to do the Ka'ena Point hike and HMS monitoring.

RR70 "Rip" was the first seal we saw. He was hauled out near the waterline @ Hidden Beach. There were several trails high above the high tide line, meaning he may have overnighted.

I called DB to let him know that his "first born" was there.

We had last seen RR70 "Rip" @ Hidden Beach with R912 "Nihoa" after she weaned her pup and was going thru her molt.

He was still there when we hiked out. A couple had just parked their truck and were about to walk down to the beach with a dog running around them. I whistled from far and they stopped on their steps. As soon as I caught up with them and explained that dogs were not allowed at Ka'ena Pt off leash and that there was a seal on the beach. They apologized, tied the dog up on the back of the truck and then asked me if they could go down in turns to see the seal to take a couple of photos. I walked down with them and did some extra outreach.

Next morning encounters were RW30 Molokai girl, hauled out on the reef at the entrance of Ka'ena's Pool.
RO40 "Ka'ena" was at the very end of the Runway and RW02 "Kauai PV" was in a very well hidden place beyond the Main Pool.

Lindsay (from the Pacific Rim Conservation / Birds) was"was with a group banding Albatross chicks and some of the adult birds. Betsy Gagné (from NARS) was with them.

A group of ~70 Punahou seniors arrived at the point, Betsy came down and we did some outreach with the students. After they left Betsy, Kimo & I spent another couple of hours talking stories - there's always so much more to learn about that place.

The tide started to rise, bigger waves rolled in, from the Main Beach we kept an eye on RO40 "Ka'ena" and saw him be washed by a couple of waves. We packed up and prepared to go that way, one last wave and he decided to enter the water. We went up the trail towards his pool and sure enough there he was at the entrance trying to haul in, but Ms RW30 spread herself in front of him blocking his passage. He insisted on one side, then the other and finally just lay himself beside her and both went to sleep.

Kimo & I did a last check on birth beach / Mokuleia and there was RN58 "Luana" near the waterline. She was sleeping in a position were her hind was down a sand dune. She looked just like a little puppy after playing for a long time fall asleep on its food dish.

Some days are just so very special, today was one of those and a very needed and welcome one. Aloha, Lesley

At 0655 I peered into the cove on the Sandy Beach side of the Blowhole Lookout and there was Kea (RN04) snoozin’ in the cove. He has remained all day.

At 0720 I found Sadie&Pup (RB12)(S#11), 20 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. A feed was in progress. This is a new location for them so I presume they had done an early morning water session. I would see 2 swim sessions in rough water, and 3 feeds.

Also at 0720 I found the same U/F , 20 ft right of 1BS, and Kainoa (RN04) at Right Middle Cliff. It took a while but I finally got a look at his CC wound. Healing continues.

At 1405 posse member June called to advise that Maureen (the Dove Lady) had called her to report an animal just hauling out to Sandy Beach. When I arrived at 1415 I found T21M at the east end. He is 100% molted, and his forehead natural bleach was clearly visible. I picked up the rope at dark. T21M remains.

At 0716 Team Billand reported RIP (RR70) at the showers, White Plains. Lifeguards advised that he departed at 1630.

At 0752 the Billands found Kermit (R012) foraging off shore of Kermit’s Reef. At 0843 he took a fisherman’s line, which broke. When he hauled out at the first bunker, west of the Nimitz Jetty the Billands checked for a hook and saw nothing, but their check was no 100%. The Billands advise that Kermit later relocated to a new location approximately 1 mile west of the Jetty.

At 0752 the Billands advised that they’d gotten a call from Terri reporting 2 animals at Paradise Cove. She thought one was Pohaku. When they Billands arrived later they found only Nihoa (R912).

At 1014 posse member Christian Young called to advise that Rocky (RH58) was below the Lighthouse, Diamond Head. Colleen Melanie were also with her at various points, as well as Todd&Darlene (the Van’s from Can) providing info and shots. Colleen advised that Rocky was still there at dark.
