I spent the day with M38,Buster,Mojo & Duke at Rabbit Island. Just a routine day until...... "Ive got some bad news for you... " were Shawn Farry's exact words. The call came at 1253. He went on to say that Mikala had been found at Bellows, MURDERED in yet ANOTHER Gill Net. She was still wrapped in it, floating in the water, and was brought ashore by Bellows lifeguards. I'd last seen her at Rabbit Island on Sunday. I am sick and tired of the HYPOCRISY !!!!! She was 9 months, 19 days old today.

From Makai Pier at 0644, I found what would prove to be Mikala, up in the grass behind Seal Rock Inlet at the right end of the beach, on Rabbit Island. She would move down around 1100 allowing her ID, with her upside down N20, left side bleach.

At 1324, Duke hauled out to 1BS at the left end of the beach. Both animals remained there all day.

Dana Jones called at 1039 to report that Kahe Power Plant to Maili was certified Monk Seal free.

Multiple calls to the White Plains lifeguards were never answered, so I don't know if they had anybody or not. A late afternoon call to Brenda Becker , who had the phone, brought news that the only calls received all day were from Dana, and a report of an animal near the Fire Station in Hauula, just a bit before my call. Shawn and Jessica were going to check it out. A 1530 follow up call from Brenda reported that Jessica couldn't ID the animal but the description sounded like KC to me.

4/8/2010 DB Dailies

At 0640, from Makai Pier, I found M38 cruisin' in the Morning Glory, 80 ft left of 1BS , on Rabbit Island. When I got back to the pier at 0910 ,M38 had moved down to cool off. On a pan I found Duke, 50 ft right of 3BS.

At 0943, Kolohe hauled out 50 ft left of 1BS, and he and M38 galumphed toward one another. There was some initial interaction with M38 climbing on. Both moved to the water and play continued in the shore break for a short time. At 1133 Kolohe hauled out again to the same location, and remained there for the rest of the day.

I panned to the right, looking for a swimming head, and sure enough there was M38 swimming to the right, just passing 2BS. At 1137 he hauled out to join Duke, right of 3BS. There was some initial interaction, but both quickly settled down to snooze mode for the rest of the day.

Team Billand called to report 2AW at Tracks. They had already checked other west side spots looking for RI37, but she was a no show today. At 0748 they reported Kermit fronting #1706, at White Plains.

On my first look at Rabbit Island, at 0711, I found Sadie tucked in against the cliff, 30 ft left of 1BS , and at the right end of the beach found Mikala and Buster side by side up in the grass behind a spot I call Seal Rock Inlet.   When I got back to Makai Pier at 0816 I found that there was now a little gang of Sadie, Duke and Kolohe all together in the Morning Glory, 30 ft left of 1BS. The entire cast would move down to cool off around mid morning, and I never saw any interaction at all.

Team Billand reported Kermit, for the 3rd day, at Maili Point.

A check of Todd White's blog www.northshoremonks.blogspot.com will show you that KC was once again at Mokuleia today. This time just down the beach near Crozier Dr.

She wasn't there on my 0600 check, but when I got back to Irma's at 0703 I found Irma waiting for me, 200 ft east of the Kealahou traffic light. I cordoned her off and rechecked here throughout the day. She has remained all day, and I'll be off to recheck her again shortly.

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0734, I found Benny snoozin' , 70 ft right of 3BS. He has basically been there for the last 3 days now, moving down to cool off in the afternoons.

When I got back to Makai Pier at 0930 I found Duke , high on the beach, 30 ft left of 1BS. At 1034 Kolohe would haul out and move up to join Duke. There was some play at that point and also later on when they moved down to cool off.

At 1056, Buster hauled out . He galumphed over to join Duke and Kolohe, who had moved down nearer the water line. There was play and climbing on with both the youngsters, but ultimately everybody settled down to snooze mode.

At 1332, Mikala hauled out 50 ft left of 1BS. The boys all noticed her, but only Duke moved off to follow her as she galumphed up and into the Morning Glory. Kolohe and Buster began wrestling about that time and at 1336 they entered the water, with Buster leading the way, and continued play in the shallows for a while. Ultimately I lost them in the rough water and did not see them again today.

Team Billand reported Kermit at Tracks at 1012, and found RI37 at Electric Beach at 1025. They also responded to a Shawn call about an animal at Nimitz Beach, and at 1049 confirmed R018.

From Makai Pier at 0650, I found Duke, Mikala and Buster all in a little gang 20 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. Each would move down individually during the morning to cool off, and all remained in a group all day, with no observed interaction. It was a warm fuzzy scene, but very boring.

Tracy called at 0818 reporting that she'd seen Irma below the 2nd Lookout at Diamond Head. She advised that Colleen was handling.

Team Billand responded to a "dead seal" call from Tracy at 1109 at Tracks, and at 1136 , I'm happy to report, found two very much alive critters, RI37 and R018 snoozin' away at Tracks.

Jenn Maldonado called at 0859, asking about the ID of an animal with an F2 bleach. It would turn out to be Lona at Mokuleia. This was an especially significant find because Lona had been possibly hooked on Maui a few weeks ago, and this was her first sighting since then. I'm happy to report that Jenn saw no hook or line.

My first pass through the SE Quadrant was a bust, until I found Right Spot at Sandy Beach at 1120. I just happened to find her. Witnesses said she had hauled out at 1100. She has remained there all day.

 

When I got back to Makai Pier at 1202 I found Mikala all by herself, 40 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. I had an appointment from 1300 to 1400. When I got back to Makai Pier at 1427 I found that Mikala had been joined by Duke, Kolohe and Sadie. They were all in a tight little gang, 60 ft left of 1BS.

Team Billand reported RI37 at Tracks at 1338, and called again at 1358 to report Kermit and a separate location at Tracks.

Right Spot was still and Sandy Beach, and showed no intention of leaving, when I picked up the rope at 1915.

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0709 I found a gang of three , in the Morning Glory, 30 ft left of 1BS. They would prove to be Sadie, Mikala, and Duke. Each would move down individually at mid day, and there was no observed interaction.

Tracy called at 1201 with the report of an animal at Sandy Beach. It just so happened that I was approaching Sandy Beach when the call came in so at 1204, I arrived to find Right Spot on the main beach, right in the middle of " the show" at Sandy Beach. I got her cordoned off and will be returning to recheck her shortly.

Colleen called at 1047 to report Rocky back home at Diamond Head. She was on the rock flats to the right of the showers.

Team Billand had a rare nobody/nowhere day.

Posse members Noelle & Josh were at Ka'ena Point on Saturday (3-6-10) doing the Whale Count, but managed to spend alittle quality time with Ka'ena, Kerby and Benny.

I found Irma waiting for me at 0616 at the east end of Sandy Beach. Marilyn and I checked her throughout the day. I'll recheck her again shortly.

At 0708 on my first look at Rabbit Island I found Sadie behind the Morning Glory, 30 ft left of 1BS. When I got back to Makai Pier at 0854 I found that Buster had now joined her in the Morning Glory. At 0926 Kolohe hauled out and he too galumphed up into the Morning Glory for a snooze with the other two. All would move down individually around mid day to cool off, and all remained in a group, but there was no observed interaction.

At 1300 Mikala hauled out and joined the rest of the gang. Both Kolohe, and Sadie showed minimal interest in her arrival, but all quickly went back to snooze mode. Buster could not have cared less.

It was Whale Count Day so Team Billand were occupied, but at 1430 reported RI37 at Electric Beach. Barbara swears she saw her swimming by at Maili during the whale count at 0912. At 1511 they found R018 at Nimitz Beach, fronting cottage #1944.

For those of you who look at "the dailies", but don't necessarily check da' blog, I'd like to suggest that you do so, since Dr. Charles Littnan has sent two iKermit maps that I hope you will find interesting. After getting his transmitter at White Plains he has ventured as far as Beach Rd. at Diamond Head, and, as you know, made two unsuccessful attempts to haul out at Queen's Beach. He now appears to be heading back to the west. The map shows him passing Kewalo Basin on the return trip. http://www.monksealmania.blogspot.com/
