News from Marilyn's Ka'ena Point visit on Saturday:

I hiked/rode the Ka'ena Point trail with a friend yesterday. The weather was warm and windy. I did encounter rain on the drive to KP, but not while in the KP park.

We saw seven HMS during our trip.

From near the parking lot looking toward the point, we could RV36 E'eno playing in one of the inlets. Apparently he had been in the inlet near the parking lot earlier, but probably decided to move away because of all the tents, people and music in the parking lot.

Within the NAR, R330 "Squinty" was snoozing among rocks and not showing us much, but I did see his male ventral with mid-ventral small nb. He was just moving into a channel when we returned to check on him on the way out.

RL47 "Kamakana" was out draped over a rock in the pools Mokuleia side of Ka'ena's pool. He is fairly green and we could see his newer CC bite, although he did not show us his rear flipper tags. He also entered the water due to the rising tide when we saw him on the hike out.

On the rocks in the middle of the main pool at the point was R420 Kaipo: older mottled coat with some green, male belly, superficial partial CC scar forward of his penial hole and a deeper scar on the right side of the penial hole. He gave us a fully sprawled male view.

There was a HMS swimming in one of the channels in the NAR that we believe was RL08 "BamBamSquarePants" based on the visible CC scars we could see. We saw him head in the "runway" direction, but never saw him hauled out.

We visited RL42 Leia and her pup PO12 twice during the day. Mom and pup seem to be doing fine. PO12 was able to follow mom when the latter moved up the beach. The pup still has part of its umbilical cord.

January 29, 2026 Thursday's Dailies

Tammy went out to Ka'ena Point today with Lesley. They had a good day, seeing seals, whales and albatross, not to mention the albatross chicks have begun to hatch. 

Their first seal was PvKauai RW02 on the rocks island. Near him on the coral was R330 Squinty.  At the runway was RL47 Kamakana.  Just when they thought it was going to be a boys day, they found two females down the way. There was Mohala RP24 and Luana RN58. 

The last seal they spotted today was R420 hauling out near RL47. Fun fact Kamakana and Mohala are both Rabbit Island seals!  Along with everything else they saw a mockingbird with nesting material. (hopefully I labeled all the seals correctly)

Team R&B searched the area and was coming up empty. But then their first find were whales out not that far. There were some kayaks in the area. A calf was active and Team R&B were loving it. They finally got to see some breaching!

Then they spotted multiple seals at electric beach. The first to be ID'd was RP28 Wakea. He took off about 1:00 pm. The second to be ID'd was their big boy RH32 Kaale. They continued to watch from afar, and ID'd a third seal. It was RN14 Kalani.

Lastly they spotted a few more seals at Kahe. At first there were three seals all resting on the rocks.

There was RG32 who was with R416 Makakii.  Left to them wasRL20 Kalani, he was on his own. Later on RS32 arrived and stayed to the right. They noted that RS32 might have a hook on her hind flipper.

Marilyn went to Ka'ena Point today with a friend. They saw six seal on their venture.

On the beach in front of Camp Erdman was R407 Kawika: adult size, very old coat, male belly, no tags and scar on head. It appears he will molt any day now.

At the ponds they found RU04 "Reef" high up in the rocks: weaner size and shape, female belly and U05 tag.

While at the ponds RU12 "Poli" came swimming in and hauled out not far from RU04. RU12: weaner size and shape, U12 and U13 tags.

When they returned later RU04 and RU12 were near each other and then moved into the water where they "played". Marilyn watched them for about 20 minutes before heading out.

At BG's pool was RW02 PvKauai hauled out and asleep. Adult size, old coat, male belly and several tags. He was in the same position when they passed by later.

At the point there was RG32 on the rocks off the mail pool: adult size,

older coat, male belly, scar on right forehead. Marilyn suspects he will molt in the next month.

Later they saw R420 Kaipo up on some rock to the Mokuleia side of the main pool: adult size, newly molted, male belly, no tags, white muzzle.

Team R&B started their day at pokai. They did not see Kala today. But they did see the lovely couple foraging on the ocean side. There was Lei Ola RH48 and Nalu R3CX out there, at times by the the jetty. It was a little worrisome since there were lots of fishers out with their poles.

At  Kahe they found big boy RH32 Kaale. He was alone resting looking quite green.

Over at the outfall there were two seals foraging. One had a lot of green and the other had a clean coat. Team R&B couldn't make an ID on either of them.

Over at Tracks Team R&B spotted RP28 Wakea on shore. He is about 90% molted and initially he was alone resting peacefully. Bu then some folks showed up, one guy with a huge lens on his camera. But I guess he needed to photograph the sand fleas because he got really close. RP28 was aware of his being there looking up at them.

While out searching, Team R&B did get to enjoy the dolphins doing what they do best. At one point a mama jumped up and looking quite big.

Lastly they made their way to plains. There was KG89 Huakai on shore looking beautiful. There were signs and ropes set up for her, but that didn't stop one kid from walking right up to her.  Team R&B called out to him.
