05/09/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Melody, Leighton and Team R&BπŸ’•.   Part two of the dailies is sort of a Mother's day tribute. Thank you to Melody and Leighton for sending the beautiful photos of Kaiwi and P02 from this weekend.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from about 12:25 to 2:00 pm. During her observations there were only two critters.  Just as she was setting up the scope a seal hauled out about 30 feet Lanikai side of the 1BS. This seal is identified as an UAM, unidentified adult to subadult size, older coat, dark male belly and two tags. He moved slightly up.

At about 1:05 Marilyn realized that weaner P01 had hauled out about 40 feet Lanikai side of the 2BS.

P01 was ID'd by weaner size and coloration, NB on the LFF and no tags. And Marilyn mentioned she still isn't sure if P01 is male or female. At first she thought the skin fold going from the penial notch to the rear flippers, later she though she saw four nipples.  To say the least it's frustrating.

Team R&B were driving when they noticed the little green seal trying to haul up on the rocks. They knew it was RL20 but they couldn't stop. They did return later but little green Kalua was gone. So we don't have any photos.

When they were able to make a stop at a westside location they spotted a little mint green seal on its back snoring between the rocks. It was the beautiful little female from Molokai RL70 Leina.  If she hadn't stretched, they might have missed her.

At the same site in the seal inlet was RN14 Kalani and it looked like he had just hauled in. He made his way to the right and immediately went to sleep.  They left the site but returned around noon and found three male teens harassing RN14. Kalani was leaping, posturing and barking at the boys. They yelled out to the boys, they moved away, but didn't leave. They hung around for a bit and so did Team R&B, who were able to lecture one of the boys. Finally the boys left.

During the morning Team R&B hurried over to find RL12 Aukai at KoOlina. She was in a zone that

security had made with ropes and signs. They educated the folks around the area who were very interested in the seal. There was only one little girl who made her way into the zone coming within 10 feet of Aukai. Finally her mom called her out and got her away from the seal. Team R&B called the hotline and were told someone was on their way. So they waited around, then around 11 am a couple of volunteers arrived moved the signs out a little further and took away the rope.  Aukai was snoozing in the zone. Team R&B left knowing someone was looking after her.
