03/16/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕.  There is a separate post with the link to KITV news regarding the loss of RK40. Please take a moment to read Lesley's story along with the link.

Team R&B had a busy day today and still found time to send there updates.  Thank you, for your dedication Team !

Their first critter was Kaale RH32 foraging in the outfall. They couldn't stay so they don't know if he hauled out, but they did see a turtle grazing on limu on the rocks.

Next stop was at KoOlina where they found Miss R1KM in a lagoon snoozing. Initially it was all

peaceful until some kids decided to shoot her with their water guns. Team R&B went to talk with the kids and called the hotline. R1KM is huge and was agitated by the kids and other people getting too close.  Team R&B was told a volunteer was on their way.

At another westside location they found RN14 Kalani coming up on the rocks. RG28 Lefty was snoozing next to him.

They headed off to another location and found R3CU alone. He has a new wound that is healing on his chest area (looks like a bite). He seems fine, and although the wound is open it is healing. Good news that these critters have an amazing capacity to heal !  While hanging out with R3CU Team R&B found a bird with an injured left foot. They did some investigation and good posse they found out it's a Brent Goose from Alaska. They'll check on it again tomorrow.

03/04/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team R&B got to the outfall this morning and got a big treat watching Kaale RH32 eating a big stick fish. He was tossing it about chasing it under the water and coming back up with chunks missing. After about 40 minutes he finally swallowed the rest of it.  Not only did Kaale entertain them, but the fishermen were impressed.

From a distance they could see a seal hauled out at tracks. They headed over and found RG28 Lefty alone and snoozing. He was paid a visit by a lady walking her dog and this is one of those times when the woman did not see the seal. Lefty scurried to the waters edge, and the woman was very apologetic. Turns out all worked out Lefty stayed put.

Team R&B see another seal coming in. RN14 Kalani came right in and scooted up to Lefty who barked

at him. Kalani moved up and the two boys settled in for the day. They also got to see the dolphins out and about having a good time as dolphins always seem to have.

While watching for whales and dolphins there was another seal coming in. It was R407 Kawika, he approached cautiously looking to RN14 Kalani. Kalani wasn't having it and a fight broke out and the two boys Kawika and Kalani left shore and out by the surfers. The surfers kept watch and gave the seals room to argue. Team R&B called the hotline to report. They stayed until they lost sight of Kalani and Kawika.

Team R&B went to check on the stickfish eating machine Kaale who had hauled out not to far from the outfall. There were two seals Kaale RH32 and Kekoa Alii RK72.  The area has a new camp set up with lots of new faces, Team R&B didn't stay long.

Team R&B headed over to KoOlina to check and it was crazy with people and a couple of seals. R1KM was on shore in the middle of the tourist. She was moving about and kids were in front of her. Team R&B asked them to move away and to stay behind the signs.  It was frustrating and there were too many people pushing the limits. A volunteer had been on site but left for another section.  Turns out the lovely Aukai RL12 was at another lagoon. There was no signs when they first saw her, but the security folks went looking.

Much to their surprise and happiness RW22 Kolohe was in paradise cove and no signs. Thankfully a

little later a volunteer arrived and so did the signs.

Lastly Team R&B happen to be passing an area and spotted two seals on the beach. They went to check and one of them was RW02 PvKauai and the other took some time to ID. The seal had tags but hidden and its coat was brown in color and no real markers. After a bit the seal showed its tags and there was RH36 Kawena!  Good to see her since that hadn't seen her in a while.

03/03/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D, Lesley and Team R&B💕. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team R&B did their usual checks and found one seal in the outfall, snacking or trying to find a snack. It was none other than Kaale RH32.  They noticed him coming up on the rocks to get at something. They couldn't tell what was there, maybe a tako trying to get away.  Kaale left the outfall heading to haul out at a nearby beach.  They headed over and saw him on shore.

They walked towards tracks they spotted a seal swimming along shore heading in the same direction.

Just as they got to the site there was RG28 Lefty landing. He was very vocal and loud. They looked around to see if there were any other seals he was reacting to but there were none.

Team R&B headed back to check on Kaale, while there they could see another seal had joined Lefty at tracks. It was RN14 Kalani!  Happy to see this boy, Team R&B called the hotline to inform. Just as a side note Team R&B got an amazing photo of a ray jumping!

At one point they saw two more seal in the outfall but by the time they got there they were gone. Their best "guessimate" that one was RN14 and the other Kekoa RK72.  They saw a seal landing on the rocks at a nearby beach. It was Kekoa Alii RK72, laying there snoozing on the rocks looking quite handsome.

Team R&B decided to take a drive to KoOlina and was thrill to see a seal on shore with a zone set up. There lay the "royal lady" R1KM/R1KN. Team R&B has become very fond of her. They describe her as beautiful, chubby and sweet. Everyone was respectable of the seal.  R1KM has three cookie cutter shark bite scars on her chest.

After leaving KoOlina Team R&B made one more stop at a west side beach. When they arrived they saw some dude with a big fish. Then a seal was hauling up on lower rocks and the dude threw something at the seal. The seal flipped flopped about on the rocks, and then dove into the water hole, looking back at the guy. Team R&B yelled out to him to Stop! They approached him and the seal came out of the hole and hauled back up but was very skiddish. Turns out he threw fish guts for her to eat it was RL70 Leina. They explained not to feed the seals, and they pointed out how she was spooked.  He understood, thankfully. They saw RH76 Kala mid high rocks and RW02 PvKauai at the seal inlet area.

Meanwhile on Molokai Team T&D spent their last day getting some R&R finally. They did see one last seal on this trip an untagged adult male. He spent the entire day on the beach getting his share of R&R.
