05/26/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Leighton, Melody and Team R&B💕.  Leighton sent photos from his visit with Kaiwi and P02 yesterday and Melody sent photos and a video from her visit today.. We have lots of Kaiwi and Loli'i photos.

Team R&B did their usual searching of the west side.  They sent us a beautiful photo of the early morning moon. On their morning trek they saw lots of dolphins out at play, and so were the snorkelers trying to catch up to them.
They found RL20 Kalua was spotted at pokai bay foraging. They
were happy to see him once again foraging. He never landed so they left the site.
When they checked in the afternoon they had just missed him. One of the guys mentioned they just missed the seal on the rocks.

While searching around the beached they came across Kala RH76 who was at seal inlet snoozing alone.
At the other end was the mysterious R407 Kawika who seem to suddenly appear. They never saw him come in, nor did he make any sound. He is looking healthy.

Lastly they found the beautiful RL70 Leina from Molokai. (we hope she stays here with us on Oahu). She was way to the right snoozing, until the waves got to her and she hung on for dear life.

Leighton was with Kaiwi and Loli'i P02 yesterday. The boy wanted to go surfing during high tide, but he quickly realized that it was too rough and high tailed it back to the beach.

Melody was with Kaiwi and Loli'i today.  It was another day of rough
waters and Loli'i was up to the task. He did a few deep dives, a little nursing on the reef and snoozing on the beach in between. It seems Kaiwi has gotten her second wind and is doing her best to train this boy.  He seems to be barking a lot during nursing, maybe he's not filling up. He's also in biting his mom stage, and Kaiwi is taking it like the seasoned mom that she is.
The bond between a mother monk seal and her pup is amazing. It is such a short time they are together and so in tune with each other, but soon Mom will leave and the kid will be on its own. It's always hard on the folks looking after them, but after so many pups I trust mother nature knows what is best.  Melody noted how special it has been watching over them and getting to know Kaiwi better and being introduced to P02 Loli'i.
