Yesterday we had a special project: it was WT Shearwater survey day. The numbers will be up by Pacific Rim conservation soon. We broke all records and doubled the number of chicks from last year. We did a quick check for seals. RW02 PVKauai was sleeping on his favorite reef island. Not far from him was RL74 Kami in the oddest position upside down.
Today I was out with the PRC team to do the last drone survey of the year. Needless to say, but just in case: the drone use is under permit.
The goal is to check the plot marked yesterday if the counts are similar in the future less people will be needed for the count = less disturbance for the chicks and less chances of crushing burrows. We are talking thousands of birds and burrows.
The flight was before dawn and finished by sunrise. We picked up the flags, team left I went on to monitor.
Saw and documented 5 seals: R330 Squinty overnighted ~70% molted in the company of R303 BG who must be getting ready for her molt; RL74 Kami in a much more comfortable position on a sandy beach; RW02 PVKauai doing his hippo thing in a pool and last RO40 Ka'ena sleeping up on a nice sandy beach.
More soon
