10/22/2021 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕.

Today I had the pleasure to represent HMSPO at Spook Life Park! (Sea Life Parks Halloween celebration).  There were lots of families with little keiki in costumes, which made the day fun.  I was in great company, Jonee Peters of Conservation Council - Hawaii, of course my friend Marilyn, and Katie Moffit of Moffitt's Mermaids. We got to talk with little ones and older ones about monk seals and point out KE18 who has made his new home at Sea Life Park.  I was fortunate to watch Dr. Beth feed him and put him through the paces. It was great to see him doing so well, and he's a big boy.

After spending the morning at the park with me, Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 2:30 to 4:10 and only had one seal.  Near the rear Lanikai-side of LPB was an Unknown Subadult (U/S/A): subadult size, newer coat and light belly. Marilyn was unable to determine its gender or see tags.
Team R&B began their day at the bay, what made this morning different then all others was there were sharks feeding, dolphins jumping today. All doing their thing without getting in each other way. They went looking for RL20 but in the morning he wasn't around.  Then they see the buggah out foraging his little heart away. It appears there is just a little molt left on his back.  Later in the day they found him hauled out and he looks oh so handsome.
If seeing RL20, dolphins, and sharks weren't enough excitement, they spotted Lei Ola RH48 and R3CX Nalu foraging. Lei Ola is looking great, healthy and very active in the water. Seems Nalu has been keeping her company lately.

Heading over to another location they found Kaale RH32. It looked like he just hauled out, all sandy and wet.. Once again he seemed restless, rolling over and over. They can clearly see his chest is opening up and looks to be 2% molted. Sadly he was bothered by some people , so he left the beach and attempted to haul again.  These people need some serious talking to.

Team R&B left to check the outfall and there was a very large seal foraging. It turned out to be RN14 Kalani getting his fill. Unfortunately there was a lay net out there, Kalani was in the area and hopefully stayed away.
