10/06/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Lesley, Melody and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.  ALSO Marilyn's Rabbit Island report is part 3 of the dailies. Let's just say it was a super busy seal day.

Melody was in Waikiki today so she took the time to check out a couple of beaches. She was happy to find Rocky RH58 and Benny RE74. They had both hauled out in the late afternoon but opposite ends of Waikiki. Rocky has completed her molt and Benny still needs to molt.

Team R&B started at the bay and found two seals foraging outside the bay. One of them had a clean

coat and a scar on the right side of its head. Later they were able to study their photos and realized this was RL12 Aukai. Of course RL20 was next to her foraging. The little green goblin was at it again.

Later in the day they made another trip to the area and RL20 Kalua had landed and was resting.  Then they noticed another seal and it was hooked!  (this is getting ridiculous) The seal was on the rocks, moving about, the hook is in the neck and visible with a line trailing. They ID'd  Lei Ola RH48, she was moving about and then left the area.

They found Kaale RH32 on the rocks snoozing. They did not see any line coming from him. There was a volunteer on site. Sadly there were a number of dogs at the site that actually chased the volunteer. These are the same dogs that have chased Team R&B before.

Team R&B arrived at Lagoon 2 and  saw a seal logging in the water. They knew the seal was RW22 Kolohe. A volunteer was on site, Team R&B shared information. They reported Kolohe. Team R&B was on site from 10:30 to 1:30. They noticed more wounds on his snout, but never saw any line or hooks. He was logging for a while and then finally landed on the rocks.  Then he left and swam to the other end (Honolulu side). Volunteer and Security tried to get people to back away. Kolohe hauled out, NOAA arrived and captured him for an examination.  This is really good news.

At another west side location they found RL70 Leina. She was alone by seal inlet resting. RL70 is 100% molted and looking quite beautiful.

Next stop on the west side they found Nalu R3CX on shore. He was resting very peacefully.  Then there was RL42 Leia snoozing at the cliffs, on the rocks.  She was alone and looking quite healthy.
