10/08/2021 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Melody, Lesley and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies.

Marilyn heard through the grapevine that RL08 was on the eastside. So before heading over to view Rabbit Island she went looking and found him  RL08 is RB00's 2019 pup born on Kauai. She apparently nursed him for some 51+days. (Our pal Val had nicknamed him Bam Bam Square Pants).  RL08 is Rocky's grandson, and Marilyn believes he is one of the unidentified seals she has been seeing on Rabbit Island. RL08 has a CC scar on his left shoulder, a CC scar mid-dorsal, and a lighter male belly. He also appears to have a few small scars on the left neck area. His L08 tag on his LRF and L09 on RRF were visible.

Marilyn arrived at the pier and viewed Rabbit Island from 12:10 to 1:30 and only saw two seals during her observation. They were near each other on LPB. There was an A/M, adult size, old coat, and darker male belly. The A/M moved up and down several times.  Then there was a J/M, juvenile size, newer coat, light male belly, and she wasn't sure about tags.

Melody was in downtown today and made a stop in Waikiki. Kaiwi arrived about mid afternoon and was resting comfortably.

Team R&B got to the bay and saw one of the folks from the camp laying on the rocks. That's when they heard a seal snort. There was RH76 Kala on the rocks galumphing about. They got a quick ID and then she left and went to foraged.

They noticed another seal RL12 Aukai going for broke. She was foraging like crazy, fast and getting her fill.

Today must have been ladies day at the bay. Lei Ola RH48 was seen foraging on the ocean side. She later landed in the afternoon and is looking quite chubby.

While watching the ladies forage there was a dolphin excursions boat that came in disrupted the seal and the school of fish that the fishermen were enjoying as well. The seals disappeared for a bit and then came back. Two seals were coming in one was ID'd as RL20 and the other was an adult very green. The green adult went after Lei Ola. They followed RL20 who landed to the left of the area. They noticed he has a hook in the right chest. One line coming from the right and one line coming from the left of his mouth.  He hauled out and scurried about on the rocks and then settled to rest.

At West Side beach they found R3CX Nalu still out there on shore enjoying his siesta. Two people out there weren't paying attention and walked very close to another seal that was on shore. Team R&B tried to signal to them to watch out, but they got the surprise of their life and immediately backed up. This was the lovely RL42 Leia.

At another west side location they found Leina RL70 on lower rocks snoozing alone. She is looking quite pretty in her new coat.  To the right at water front rocks was RN14 Kalani snoozing. He was alone today and looking just fine.
