June 8, 2019 (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update

Haaaa 7 seals day are special

Started at dawn checking on RN58 "Luana" & PO2 "Kalua" D32 they had just hauled out and were having a nursing session on the waterline.

Marilyn & Diana arrived and we headed towards the point. On our way while doing outreach with a group of fishermen, the girls called me and pointed to the water. There was a little green seal foraging. It took us a while to get her tag and confirm RK40 "Napua". As we went from camp to camp doing outreach we had her in front as a live example of what we were saying. Most of them old timers asked me if it was one of the young ones.
At 10 Mnts we found RG40 "Holokai" hauled out on the sand near the reefs barely visible.

We made it to the point, some hikers pointed out a seal on the flats on Main Pool. It was RR70 "RIP". While checking his ID Marilyn called me and pointed to the outer pool, there was RO40 "Ka'ena" swimming in. He never made it into the pool.

On our way back we saw RG40 "Holokai" still in the same spot and further down RK40 "Napua" still foraging around the front reefs.

Back at the pup site RN58 "Luana" & PO2 "Kalua" D32 were coming back from a swim. The volunteer on site pointed out that there was another seal down the sand dune but she couldn't ID it. We checked and ID RW02 "PVKauai" by his W04 tag.
I was informed he left mid afternoon after being told by Luana to move on.
On my last check at sunset mom & pup were sleeping peacefully.   More tomorrow ๐ŸŒบ
