First news from our pal Val on Kauai, she got some photos from one of her colleagues Julia Honnert. Thank you Julia for letting us share with RK36's Oahu Ohana. So word is RK36 Kauai Kolohe was on Kauai visiting with a couple of seal buds, and special friend Julia. From what I understand Julia has a special place in her heart for the boy. Today he was in the company of three other critters. There was a perfect seal line-up on the beach. I don't know who the other critters were, but any friends of RK36 is a friend of ours.
Team Billand arrived at the outfall by 7:15 am and spotted two critters in the outfall. One was Lei Ola RH48, light green face, no markers, and two tags. The other was Ka'ale RH32 who is very green, two tags and raccoon eyes. They watched the two along side NOAA's Cianna and an intern, they watching Lei Ola catch her fish, (not steal). Perhaps her good habits rubbed off on Ka'ale who did not steal any fish today from the fishermen. Even the fishermen were surprised.
Another remarkable thing Ka'ale and Lei Ola shared the fish together.
Sometimes Lei Ola caught first and would bring her catch over to Ka'ale and they would eat together. Lei Ola would toss the fish in mid air, catch it again.
Team Billand left to check other beaches but they came up empty.
So they returned to watch Lei Ola and Ka'ale at 1:30 pm. At times Lei Ola would hug Ka'ale, they are really sweet and she apparently knows how to keep him in line. They were still sharing fish, but then the rains came. Team Billand stayed until 3 pm, what a day
watching over these two.
Posse pal Vicki went to visit with R5AY Honey Girl and PO3. When she arrived, PO3 was on his own. Vicki was told by a volunteer that Honey Girl left between 6 and 7 am. While Vicki was there PO3 was snoozing and seemed content, unaffected by being on his own. So far a well adjusted weaner.
