June 24, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand.  ALSO, there is some news from posse pal Vicki in the yesterday's news department.

Vicki headed up to visit with RL20 Kalua to see how the weaner was doing.  She also spotted another critter while on site and volunteer told her it was Napua RK40. Thank you Vicki for sharing, sorry I missed them last evening.

Team Billand went to check the canal at 6:20 am this morning. When they arrived the critters were there, RW22 Kolohe was right behind RH92 just hauling up on a small patch of sand.  They spoke with one of the neighbors who remember them from when Nihoa used to hang out there.  They called the hotline and left a message. Team Billand headed out to find other seals despite the rain.
They returned back to the site and the neighbor was watching over the seals both of them sleeping.
On their last visit of the day, the seals moved up, and sounded like Kolohe went after RH92 and they got into an argument earlier, but for now they were resting quietly mid canal quietly.

Next stop for Team Billand at a westside location 6:40 am. There they spotted three critters on the rocks.

They spotted RH36 Kawena with Kekoa Alii RK72 on high rocks
snoozing side by side. Both their tags were visible. Then Team Billand notices movement in the shallows, there is Ka'ale RH32, vocalizing all by himself. He begins moving and rolling in the shallows.
Kekoa vocalizes back at him with his head high in the air (protecting his girl).  Ka'ale then moved out, and then there is another seal approaching the area. It's Lei Ola RH48 and Kekoa enters the water with Lei Ola and Ka'ale. A big fight pursues, Team Billand can not tell who is who, but Lei Ola heads for the rocks.

Ka'ale departs after losing his battle with Kekoa and goes around the lava tube. They could hear him vocalizing it was loud.
Kekoa Alii follows Lei Ola to the lower rocks and they haul up together. He left poor Kawena on high rocks just like that.
It was raining pretty hard, so they left for a while. Upon their last check all three seals remain and they no longer hear Ka'ale nor see him, he was gone.  Kekoa is playing the field and is now back with Kawena and Lei Ola is alone snoozing in the very popular water hole.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice how all the three year old critters are hanging out together. I love hearing these stories.

At 8:30 Team Billand checked in at another west side location and found RG28 on the rocks alone in the rain snoozing.

So we all know how dedicated Team Billand is, and today is one of those days when they just go that extra mile literally. Despite the rain they did the Ka'ena West trek at 11:25 am. They spotted RL42 to the left of the rocks, it was pouring so hard they waited to get the photo.
The next critter they found was RN14 Kalani. Both seals didn't move around at all. They sat in the rain and waited, but they were snoozing and very still apart from one another.
