07/11/2020 Saturday Act-With-Care Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and Marilyn.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand only had two seals today.
First they found Nalu R3CX and he was alone and was to the right of water front rocks. He remained there all day.

Next they found Ka'ale RH32 at the outfall. They stayed with him for a few hours watching him foraging and then stealing fish. The fishermen got a kick how he is gets the fish and takes off making waves. Pretty smart critter, a little too smart for his own good. He takes off like a torpedo!  He kept foraging, never hauled out during the four hours they were there.

Last seal they spotted was their little green boy, nicely hidden in the rocks. They took a couple of photos and left to keep him safe. The west side was crazy with people.  Kalua seems fine, he isn't struggling with his lip piercing.

Marilyn had an amazing eight seal day, seven of them on Rabbit Island. She did see Nohea today. This morning they could not see her N2 applied bleach, so they thought "maybe" it was one of the R.I. weaners, but they were wrong :-)

Busy day on Rabbit Island. Started from the "Lanikai" side of the island was Mom and PO5 at LPB. The pup was initially about 15 feet away from Mom and then approached her for a feeding. The pup is now 36 days old and looking a bit hefty. Marilyn was unable to take any guesses on gender. Mom is getting thinner but still appears to have some reserves. About 30 minutes later PO5 headed for the water and Mom soon followed.

Unknown juvenile female (UJF) was located about 50 ft of 3BS. UJF had two tags, yellow-green female belly, possibly 2-3 years old.  She was later joined by RG32.  (Marilyn wondered if it was Kawena RH36 coming to RI to molt).

RG32 was ID'd by his subadult - adult size, male belly, 2 tags and applied N11 bleach. He initially
was neared to PO1 Kahukai but later galumphed over to join UJF.
PO1 Kahukai was ID'd by weaner size, coloration, male belly and no tags.

PO3 Momona was located behind water front rocks to the Makapuu side of SRI. He never really came out from behind the rocks, but ID's by larger weaner size, color belly.

Unknown Adult Male (UAM) was on the rocks flats of Rocky Right Beach. Adult size, mottled male belly, older coat and a darker scar marking on the top of the head.
