07/01/2020 Wednesday Act-With-Care (99) Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

I received an email of a sighting of a unknown juvenile on the east side yesterday. It was nice to get the photos but unfortunately we have no ID on this little cutey. For sure hoping its little RK24 but no tag shots, not distinguishable markers so we only have an adorable unknown juvenile.

Team Billand was at the outfall before 7 am and spotted a seal foraging with a large fish in his mouth. In 5 seconds the seal ID'd as Ka'ale dropped the fish, took off and headed out.
About a half hour later they found Ka'ale resting on the rocks nearby. He is very green and fat. He looks healthy no new markers. He must be really full because he didn't move at all.

A little while later at another westside beach they found R3CX Nalu on lower rocks resting. A fisherman came along and walked out to mid rocks and Nalu woke up. He became aware of the man fishing and entered the water bobbing up and down in the inlet watching the fisherman.  Then he was gone.
To the right on the rocks was as Barbara calls him "her sweet green goblin" RL20 Kalua.
He was sleeping and the waves would come in over him and he would suddenly look around and scratch and then back to snooze mode. He kept moving further away from the waves and ended up inland.
On their recheck he was still there snoozing and doing fine. The fisherman was gone.

Team Billand spotted a U/U foraging off the point. They studied the animal who was greenish, two tags, adult size, but they could not make an ID.
They went back later in the afternoon and the seal was still in the area foraging doing 5 minute dives.

Team Billand found Lei Ola all alone resting on the rocks. She is looking quite beautiful with her new coat.

Shortly after they spotted a seal from the road. They hurried to the site before anyone in the area ran it off.  It was RF28 resting on the sand. A diver passed him, he turned over looking at the diver. He rolled away into the water and took off.

Lastly as they were ready to call it a day looking out onto the water for RF28 they spotted two more seals.  They were RL42 Leia and RN14 Kalani in an area they don't usually frequent. Team Billand didn't want to bring attention to them, but the folks in the area were aware of them. Good news they were respectful and let the seals rest.

There is a posting on Facebook which confirms that the unknown juvenile is RK24/25. Kimo Smith has tag shots and the facial markings (green around eyes and spots above right eye) match. Such a cutie.
I don’t know what the protocol is for using information from other sites is. So please delete this comment if it is inappropriate. I was just tickled to see the ID made. Fun to keep up with the world of seals from a distance.
