May 20, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and Marilyn.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies.

BREAKING NEWS:  We have PO4 born sometime today on Rabbit Island.  We believe the Mom to be RB12 Sadie, but since she is on Rabbit Island unable to read her tag.  As I said yesterday I would bet my cats, Marilyn's cats and the neighbors dog it is Sadie.  She was due around the 27th so she's just a little early.

Marilyn headed over to Rabbit Island this afternoon after she left an appointment. She was there between 4 and 5 pm, and I joined her shortly after.  The first thing Marilyn spotted was a large (fat) female presumably RB12 Sadie with a small black pup at Left Point Beach. ( doing happy dance)
Marilyn called it into the hotline. Pup was nursing when Marilyn first arrived, and I have to say it was still nursing when I arrived. This little one having no problem figuring out where the milk comes from.
Along with big Sadie and her little pup there were two other seals on island about 60 feet left of Seal Rock Inlet. U/J unknown juvenile with an old coat, very green and two tags. Good chance this is the same juvenile as yesterday.
Then there was an unknown male U/M sub-adult to adult size, lighter male belly and at least one tag. Marilyn is not convinced this is the same male that was there yesterday.

Team Billand found their first seal at 6:20 am foraging off shore. The seal had an applied bleach and a line scar on it's back. Since they were using an older camera they were able to get a good photo.  But they are pretty sure it was RN14 Kalani. (no photos available) He was doing 6 minutes dives and the fishermen said the seal had gone into the outfall and then took off without stealing any fish from them.

Afternoon time about 1:30 they found RG28 on the rocks with the tide rising. They were able to see the tags and signature cookie cutter bite scars.

Shortly after Team Billand spotted Lei Ola RH48 on her back relaxing and then Team Billand approached the area she flipped over. Her tags were showing, she looks just fine with nothing new to report (for her this is a good thing). The tide was rising fast and soon the whole area was covered. Lei Ola didn't care, she just stayed.
