May 16, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team T&D, ol' posse photographer Leighton, and me.

I took a ride this morning, since I now have a reliable vehicle and most important A/C.  While cruising around, I went to see my first Momma R5AY aka Honey Girl.  For the record my very first pup experience (along with many others) was with Honey Girl. So all these years later watching her what she does amazingly well, which is being a Mom warms my heart.  She hasn't lost her touch after all these years, and little PO3 well just a black velvet cuteness overload.

I got an email from an old friend of the blog, Leighton Lum who came across PO2 and Luana today. Leighton was kind enough to share some of his photos.  Leighton was one of DB's posse contacts out there, so nice for him to continue to share.

Team T&D went out to Ka'ena Point today, and on their way out they stopped off to see RN58 Luana and PO2. They had just got back from a swim when they arrived.
While out at the point Team T&D only find was Ka'ena RO40 at Hidden Beach on their way out. When they returned he was gone.

At 9 am Team Billand got a call there was a seal at plains, so they made a u-turn and headed over to plains. Upon arrival there was Pohaku RO28 on shore, in the same zone that was put up yesterday.
They made some adjustments since the beach was really crowded and called the hotline twice to inform them how crowded the beach was and there were lots of kids in and out of the zone close to the seal.  After an hour Team Billand had to leave and no word if any volunteers arrived.

Team Billand's next find was at 11:30 on the west side where they found RG28 resting on the rocks. His tags were showing, natural bleached fore flipper with white nails.

On their way to Ka'ena West they made a quick stop and found RK88 Puna tucked away in the rocks again. His tags were showing and he is looking fine snoozing on the rocks. ( can't wait for him to meet his little brother).

On their Ka'ena west trek at the 30 they found RW02 PvKauai in the water hole floating while he was sleeping. There was a volunteer that passed them letting them know there was another seal.
They then found RN14 Kalani to the right on rocks, snoozing the day away. His tags were visible in fit condition.  Guess he's taking a break from his bosom buddy.

Then on their way home just before 4:00 they were driving by when Robert yelled out "seal".  Sure enough they pulled over and Barbara jumped out of the car ran down and the seal was starting to leave the beach. They were able to get a quick ID and it was Da Benny RE74.
A couple on the beach said he had been there since 3, now he was leaving there were folks in the water swimming close by.  A life guard informed them to keep their distance.
Thank you to Robert's eagle eyes that spotted him.
