May 1, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team Tammy and Dave, and Lesley. Lesley's very busy Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Tammy and Dave were out at  Kahuku today.   Their only seal find today was little cutie K80. Looking very green and resting peacefully.
Team T&D did see a Laysan Albatross family and a bunch of Bristle-Thighted Curlews gathered together. According to Miss Tammy they should be headed back to Alaska soon. (who knew the curlews would be here so long LOL).

Team Billand was out before 6 am and while at the outfall they happened to seal a seal foraging at the right side. The seal tossed it's head back and swallowed what ever he caught.
Close to 7 am Team Billand went to a nearby beach and they found Ka'ale RH32 barking and slapping the water, very vocal. He would stay in the shallows, come up squirt water out of his mouth, over and over. Hmmm maybe he ate a rotten fish and was trying to wash the taste out of his mouth.
Team Billand left for a bit and returned just before 10 am and Ka'ale finally hauled out on the rocks resting.

The afternoon they headed west and found RIP RR70 on shore alone. It appears he might have just got there in that he was wet, or maybe the tide was rising. He was gone when they returned from their Ka'ena West trek.

They went on the Ka'ena West Hike about 1:30 and found two seals together on the rocks. There were some tourist below and a couple of volunteers.  Team Billand was able to ID Holokai RG40 who was with R3CU.  Both seals were gone when they were leaving the park.
They did spot two seals foraging and fighting to the right in the water. One had a cookie on his back but could not make a positive ID. The other seal was pretty clean and had a white mark on it's back (maybe a natural bleach, not sure)

At 2:15 Team Billand saw a fat seal resting on its back on the rocks close to the waters edge. It was RL42 Leia. She remained alone and they left to not draw attention to her location. She is looking fine and is well hidden.
It's a family affair
