May 26, 2019 (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update

Well hands full and little time and ops... haven't done reports for a couple of days
On Thursday I went out to the point with Team Tammy & Dave and we were SKUNKED !! as a consolation prize we stopped at "The Ponds" and had a nice swim. The heat as been brutal all week. The Kona wind was a killer so we are glad to have the trades back.
The nice thing of the Kona winds was that the ocean looked like a lagoon, we whales breaching (yes they're still some around), endless pods of dolphins spinners and bottle nose ones.
Albatros chicks are growing and fledging. Some already have big feathers on half of their bodies. We should see the mohawks hair dos this week.
Very few adults were seen until yesterday when we saw a handful.
Yesterday I was out with Marilyn and Diane and we got to see a bunch of seals. We saw a small seal swimming near Manini, and just as we got our cameras it did a dive and we didn't see it again. Due to location we all agreed that it could have been RK40 "Napua" but only she knows.
At the point we saw RW02 "PVKauai" at the end of the Runway and on some reefs further towards the point R353 (F) was stretched out enjoying the warm sun. Hikers and visitors were pleased to see our wildlife and thanked us for all the outreach we did.

Everyday I've been doing dawn & sunset patrols as well as several checks during the day on RN58 "Luana" & PO2 "Kalua" today D19.
They have been moving a lot doing long swimming sessions with big dives and surfes. They had RNO40 "Ka'ena visiting them for 2 days and 2 nights to add more emotions to all involved in the monitoring.
This long weekend started with many campers and parties around, we have been on our tip toes and DOCARE and HPD have helped a lot with their presence.

Be safe out there - specially coming and going from parties and make sure to have designated drivers.   2 days are down but still another 2 to go.    More tomorrow

Almost 3 weeks old...
