Team Billand was out early to look for critters but coming up empty they went for breakfast and decided to go visit PO2 and Luana. When they got to the site there were no seals. WHAT? they went looking found a volunteer and Lesley. Then of course there was Mom & Pup.
As Barbara said nothing sweeter than watching a Mom & Pup interact. This little boy is active, woke up and immediately went looking to nurse, climbing over and on Mom. Mom turned away and the kid followed, into the water they went for a long swim (over an hour) and then came into the shallows, it was a little bit longer before they finally hauled out on shore and in the zone. Team Billand could hear the kid vocalizing, watched Mom turn on her side, and then he began his feast.
Team Billand headed out back to their end of the island. It was about 3 when they spotted a seal from a far. They went to check and it was RH92 moving up higher on shore. The tide was very rough and high and she was the only critter around. There were lots of people out and about so Team Billand left not wanting to draw attention to her.
While Robert was with RH92, Barbara went over to another westside beach and found Lei Ola RH48 alone, well at first. As she was taking her photos another seal hauled up behind her. Seems Lei Ola knew immediately there was a critter behind her, she turned took a look and they had words. RN!4 Kalani moved slowly and lay himself down next to her. The tide was high and at times causing them to roll into each other. RN14 Kalani finally gave up and left. He gave her one last look to see if she was following, she wasn't and he left the site. Lei Ola remained getting slapped by the big waves rolling in. She got hit good by a wave and left about shortly after.
Marilyn checked the east side spots early morning and found no one. She went to the pier and did a quick check and spotted two seals on the Lanikai side of Left Point Beach. Viewing conditions weren't great so she left for a bit.
Marilyn returned to the pier about 11:15 and I joined her shortly after. There were three critters on the Island.
A very large, (and I mean HUGE) adult female, pregnant who we presume is RB12 Sadie. I will bet my cats, and the neighbors dog that is Sadie. But for science purposes it was an Unknown fat female :-)
Second critter was an unknown adult male, which we both agreed it looked like a male. Adult size
but dwarfed by the fat female ( pregnant Sadie). The U/M had a mottled belly and at least one tag.
After about 45 minutes the U/M headed towards another seal. Unknown juvenile (female) who was snoozing about 60 feet to the right of the two adults. The UJ had two tags, an old coat and a very green belly and eyes. The U/M approached the juvenile, which caused the little one head in the other direction and shortly after entered the water.
About 20 minutes later, we believe to be the same U/J hauled out between the 3BS and SRI.
"Sadie" and U/M moved further up the beach and to the right. The U/M was pestering her some, and I have to say she was pretty patient with him.
