10/31/2020 Saturday Halloween Blue Moon Monk Seal Dailes

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Marilyn and Melody. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. In yesterday's news department, Melody's friend Sandra was at Ka'ena point and sent a picture of little Kami RL74. Melody included a photo of a "spooky" Rocky in spirit of Halloween.

Marilyn was out today checking the east side, at one point a gentleman flagged her down and told her of a small seal on the rocks. Marilyn went to check and found Nohea with her N2 clearly visible. She was first seen at 9:30 am and Marilyn did a recheck at 11:30 and then again at 1:45, she was in complete snooze mode.

Marilyn also found R016 about 12:40 this afternoon. She was ID'd by adult size, right side NB, upper

chest scar and lack of tags. She has a lot of green in several places so it appears she had not molted recently. She is looking good and seemed unpertubed by the folks around, thankfully there were two signs posted.

There was only one seal on Rabbit Island today. Marilyn spent over an hour observing an unknown unknown UU. Juvenile to subadult size, new coat and at least one tag. The seal never exposed its belly so she didn't know if it was a male or female. Only one critter today, how unusual.

Team Billand headed out before 6 am to see the moon setting at the bay. They were also surprised to see the fishermen were already out at the jetty. After enjoying the moon setting to start another day, they headed off to check on Benny.

They arrived at PC and found that Benny was still there. It was 6:30 am and the signs were up, Team Billand donated some rope to keep the Benny safe. They stayed on and educated a lot of folks that were up early. Most of them were out to check out the turtles. Benny continues his molt, slow going. Team Billand called the hotline and just after 8, volunteer Melina arrived. Team Billand left about 15 minutes later.

Team Billand headed over to another west side location and at 9:30 they found Kekoa Alii RK72. He

was already on lower rocks snoozing away, he would remain all day long. Kawena RH36 was to the right at seal inlet, also snoozing. She stayed in the same spot all day. Lefty RG28 was to the right near water front rocks, squeezed in a water hole, snoring. (lol). And along with Kawena and Kekoa he remained in his spot all day. While watching over the seals, they saw a UU passing by, it never landed and they were not able to get an ID.

Team Billand headed back to the bay at 10:15. When they arrived they saw Nalu R3CX foraging, passing the boats that were out there, and then passing with Lei Ola RH48. And then about noon he finally landed. Nalu is still hooked and the fishing line is still crinkled from the left corner of his mouth. Much to Team Billand's delight when Nalu landed he had a friend with him. They were thrilled to see Lei Ola.

Also foraging in the bay was RL20 Kalua. He was seen passing the small boats, swimming near swimmers who were yelling. (not sure if they were yelling cuz they were scared or excited).Ka'ale was seen at the jetty catching fish, boy can he eat. And then there was Miss Aukai RL12 zipping all over the bay back and forth.
