10/15/2020 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and a bit of yesterday's news from Melody.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Melody had gotten word that Rocky was in the neighborhood, so she was out bright and early to check. Unfortunately Rocky left before she arrived. Since she was out and about early she decided to check on some critters on the west side. She saw Ka'ale having breakfast at the outfall, and called Team Billand.  Seems Ka'ale was stealing a couple of fish and the fishermen were respectable. Always nice to have them not get upset with him. (ALTHOUGH this is an extremely bad habit). Melody caught up with Team Billand and saw many of the same seals they had reported on.

Team Billand made a quick stop at a popular seal spot at 6:30 and only found Lefty RG28. He was at

water front rocks.

At 7 am they went to check and sure enough Kawika R407 was alone high up on shore by the bath house.  He was resting peacefully during their visit.

Much to their surprise today at 12:25 they saw a seal sleeping on the rocks who they thought was Kalani.  After taking a closer look and seeing the cookie scar they realized it was Ka'ena RO40.  He was pretty still but finally moved and they got the tag shot to confirm. He is looking quite green and large.

They returned to check on Lefty who now moved inland and about 20 feet away from him was RL70 Leina.  They were the only two hanging out today.

Team Billand got word from some of the fishermen there were seals at Pokai Bay. Initially they saw and ID'd three seals.  There was RL20 Kalua he was the smaller one swimming back and forth going past the canoes and swimmers.  Then there was Kaale RH32 chasing fishing lines up on the rocks at times. Finally they were able to ID R3CX Nalu, his natural bleach on left side of face was visible.  While checking their photos they notices a fourth seal swimming through but could not make an ID, so it was reported as a UU with a green snout.

LASTLY on this evenings news there was a tragic story of RL52 born in 2019 on Kauai who had been killed by gunshot. I believe the death occurred in September. Here is the link to KHON news. I have a picture from last year shortly after he was weaned.  https://www.khon2.com/local-news/young-monk-seal-found-shot-to-death-along-kauais-shoreline-information-wanted/
