10/01/2020 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D and Team Billand.

Team T&D hiked Ka'ena today, turns out they were out there a couple hours after Lesley. Turns out they saw the same critters. Their first find was Squinty R330 at Lymans. Next RL98 Lina was at 10 minute beach. They were not able to determine if there were any signs of her first molt.  Their last find was RL74 Kami and Ka'ena RO40 at the waterline at back beach.

Just before 7 am Team Billand spotted two seals at Tracks snoozing. Ka'ale RH32 and Kawika R407 were high up on shore.  Team Billand made a line with rocks since there would be people arriving soon. They called the hotline. Volunteer arrived and Team Billand filled her in on who the seals were. Volunteer removed the rocks.  Team Billand left the site.  Some old posse pals Karen and Diane returned to the site with Barb. The two critters were still on site but there were no signs to warn people.

Next stop Team Billand found Kolohe RW22 snoozing alone in the playboy pond. Lefty RG28 was in a

little pond snoozing alone peacefully. His new coat is shiny and he's looking handsome.  RL70 Leina arrived while they were observing Kolohe. She came up through the seal inlet to the right and went right to sleep. Later she moved to mid upper rock.

While on site they heard snorting sneezing and saw a critter thrashing its head back and forth. R3CX Nalu had a line coming from left corner of his mouth. They did not see any hook. They notified NOAA and sent photos.

Nalu got into a spat with Kolohe and they both left the area. Nalu returned to the rocks at seal inlet still thrashing and snorting. Lefty heard him and galumphed over. Lefty bit the side of Nalu's hook, as if he was trying to help. Nalu came to the shallow pond and Team Billand was able to see the crinkled line.  Volunteer arrived, Team Billand pointed out the hook and left the site.

RL20 Kalua was there pretty much hidden in the rocks to the right of water front rocks. His white belly and tag were exposed.

RN14 Kalani was alone at Kahe snoozing in the pond. On their second visit he moved to the left side on the rocks. Very long stressful day for Team Billand.
