10/11/2020 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Marilyn.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:45 to 1:50 and spotted two critters on island today.  At left point beach not far from the 1BS was UAM#1 unknown adult male, old coat with about 20% molt on the upper ventral surface, at least one tag. Marilyn is sure this is the same seal that was there yesterday.

Near the 3BS was UAM#2 unknown adult male smaller in size, old coat, 2 tags.  Marilyn thinks he may be ready to molt soon.

When Marilyn had first arrived and setting up she saw a small seal (weaner or young juvenile) entering

the water. She never saw the critter again and wasn't able to get any photos.

Team Billand first stop on the west side there were two seals. One was Kawika R407 still molting. It took them a bit to ID the other critter because of the light and its position. Finally they determined it was RN14 Kalani, looking quite sandy.  They called the hotline and stayed until 8:45.

At 8:55 am Team Billand found Ka'ale at the outfall foraging and stealing fish at the outfall. He was there forever getting big and fat.  Team Billand also witnessed a crab with a cigarette (no joke).

At 11:11 am Ka'ale finally moved on and hauled out where Kawika R407 and Kalani RN14 were. As he galumphed all the way the two barked at him, poor Kaale didn't feel welcomed so he left the area swimming along the shoreline.

Team Billand went to check on another west side location. At 1:15 they found four seals. Leina RL70 was in her little hide out alone snoozing.  RH76 Kala and RG28 Lefty resting on the rocks. Last but not least was RL20 Kalua. This little guy still has his hook. They spent time looking him over closely and then called the hotline to update. He is in good condition, good weight, coat looks healthy. The blue and white line is gone and the swivel line is gone too. The only thing they saw was the original hook on the right side of this mouth.  He was was very cooperative while they spent the time accessing his condition.
