10/17/2020 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Marilyn.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island for two hours today, overcast conditions made it a bit of a challenge. There were five critters on island today.

Near the 3BS: unknown female weaner, no tags, female belly and no applied bleach, therefore making it PO5 a good guess.

Towards SRI: Unknown juvenile in size, two tags, unseen belly.  Unknown adult male #1, adult size, at least one chipped tag, male belly and about 20% molted

including upper chest. Unknown adult male #2 not sure about tags, male belly and about 95% molted. Just some remnants of old coat on the rear dorsal area and some around the head.  Unknown subadult female, new coat, female belly and two tags. She entered SRI about 1:45 and then hauled out more toward RRB at 2 pm, then went back into the water about 2:07.

At 6:25 am Team Billand found Kawika R407 alone all the way up by the trees. Right after they left they checked from afar and saw a lady walk right up to R407. He was lifting his head and looking at her. Turns out Team Billand was talking with her husband, and they asked him to have her move away, he called, crisis diverted.

On their second visit he was still there, along with lots of people and a drone flying over. They called the hotline. During the afternoon they spotted a second seal with Kawika but they were too far away and it was too late to follow up.

Seems this week has brought good fishing for all at the bay. There have been at least four seals foraging, birds flying and diving for fish, along with all the humans.  Seal #1 R3CX Nalu was foraging between small boats, surf boards, kayaks, swimmers and the fishermen on the jetty. Seal #2 Kaale RH32 was all over the place, by the fishers, canoes, and fought with the green faced UU.  The frigate and boobies were catching some fish too.

Seal 33 RL20 Kalua was in the area a little bit later. He was passing the buoy area, swimmers and boats.

Everytime he came up a person on a paddle board would hurry over to see the little guy and he would dive down fast. His tags, and scars were visible.

The green faced seal is stil an unidentified female, still no clue who this is. Unable to tell if she is tagged. Kaale and Nalu kept going over to her.

Team Billand made a late check at another west side location and found RL70 Leina on her own sleeping. Seems everyone else is busy foraging at the bay.
